Complete Cure for Damjeok Disease? Curious About Treatment Methods?

Have you ever felt a tightness in your epigastrium, a bloated lower abdomen, or frequent gas buildup in your everyday life?

Especially if you experience poor digestion and a pain that feels like your abdomen is hard as a rock, I believe you will empathize with the suffering of Damjeok disease patients whom I often see in my clinic.

Many male patients in their 40s and 50s come to me exhausted because, despite undergoing all sorts of tests at internal medicine clinics for these chronic indigestion symptoms, they are repeatedly told that there is nothing particularly wrong.

For those who feel even more frustrated by diagnostic results that appear normal on the surface, I want to frankly explain, based on my clinical notes, what Damjeok disease is and why such suffering persists.

The Reason the Inside is Ailing, Even if it Looks Fine on the Outside

This is not a problem that appeared suddenly one day.

It is the result of decades of accumulated poor dietary habits or excessive stress gradually affecting our body's digestive organs.

Patients often ask, “My endoscopy results are clean, so why do I still have indigestion and stomach pain?

Every time I hear that question, it pains me.

Mr. Kim Young-ho (pseudonym) was a company worker in his early 50s who had been suffering from chronic indigestion and abdominal discomfort for several years.

“Whenever I eat, my epigastrium feels heavy and stuck, and I feel like my stomach is full of gas.”

“I alternate between constipation and diarrhea, and in the mornings, I always feel bloated, making me dread going to work.”

“Occasionally, my entire abdomen hardens, and it hurts as if someone is hitting it with a hammer.”

Even if no specific inflammation or ulcers are found during an endoscopy, the suffering patients experience is undeniably real.

I interpret this as the true nature of Damjeok disease, often hidden behind the diagnosis of functional dyspepsia.

Damjeok disease is not merely a problem occurring inside the stomach and intestines; it is a problem with the outer wall of the stomach and intestines and surrounding tissues.

Damjeok Disease, a Systemic Problem Starting in the Outer Gastric Wall

So what exactly is Damjeok disease?

I explain Damjeok disease as ‘a condition where the outer wall of the stomach and intestines hardens, and toxins and waste products accumulate, affecting the entire body’.

It's similar to an old water pipe getting clogged with residue, disrupting water flow, and eventually the pipe itself hardening.

In other words, it is a disease fundamentally on a different level than simple indigestion.

The core principle of Damjeok disease can be understood as follows: First, when the gastric mucosa weakens due to stress, irregular meals, excessive alcohol consumption, etc., undigested food particles or bacterial toxins, among others, penetrate the outer wall of the stomach and intestines through this damaged mucosa. These invading toxins accumulate in the outer gastric wall tissues, causing inflammatory reactions and fibrosing the tissues, making them hard and stiff. The hardened outer gastric wall then reduces peristaltic motility, hindering food digestion and elimination. Ultimately, the toxins accumulated in the outer gastric wall spread throughout the entire body via blood vessels and lymphatic vessels, leading to various secondary symptoms such as headaches, stiff shoulders, chronic fatigue, and skin problems.

In my clinical experience, the causes of Damjeok disease are accompanied by chronic inflammation and functional decline and tend to not be easily resolved with simple medication.

The case of Mr. Park Ji-ho (pseudonym), whom I met in my clinic, is a representative example.

Mr. Park Ji-ho (pseudonym) was a businessman in his mid-40s, whose environment inevitably brought him into frequent contact with alcohol and greasy foods.

For several years, he had suffered from severe gastritis and reflux esophagitis, and despite undergoing gastric endoscopy several times, no specific structural abnormalities were found.

Nevertheless, he complained of Damjeok disease symptoms such as, “My stomach always feels heavy and full of gas, like it’s about to burst,” and “When I wake up, I have a bitter taste in my mouth, and my body always feels heavy in the morning.”

While performing pulse diagnosis and abdominal palpation on Mr. Park Ji-ho (pseudonym), I determined that the outer wall of his stomach and intestines was significantly hardened and that immediate improvement of his gastrointestinal function was crucial.

It was toxins generated as food was not properly digested and putrefied in the stomach and intestines that made the outer wall of the stomach and intestines hard, and these toxins were spreading throughout the body, ruining the overall condition of his body.

As such, Damjeok disease is not limited to digestive symptoms but can manifest in various forms, including headaches, stiff shoulders, chronic fatigue, and even depression, making patients suffer even more.

Damjeok Disease Treatment: Where to Begin?

Many people try various methods hoping for fundamental recovery from Damjeok disease, but they often say the results are disappointing.

General gastrointestinal disease treatment primarily focuses on gastric acid suppression or promotion of gastrointestinal motility.

However, since Damjeok disease originates from problems with the outer gastric wall and systemic imbalance, such an approach alone may have limitations.

Therefore, I approach Damjeok disease from the perspective of traditional Korean medicine (Hanbang) treatment.

Rather than simply suppressing symptoms, I strive to loosen the hardened outer gastric wall and improve overall body circulation to address the root causes of Damjeok disease.

Herbal medicine (Hanyak) treatment is prescribed according to the patient's individual constitution and symptom patterns.

Based on herbal ingredients that remove toxins from the outer gastric wall and soften hardened tissues, we also use herbal ingredients that aid in overall Qi and Blood circulation and strengthen immunity.

This focuses on boosting the body's natural healing power to lay the groundwork for self-recovery.

Rather than expecting dramatic effects in the short term, Damjeok disease treatment is a process of gradually transforming the body's environment through consistent effort.

After carefully examining each patient's lifestyle and current physical condition, my role is to assist in their fundamental recovery by combining the most appropriate herbal medicine prescription with lifestyle management.

A Journey Beyond an Exhausted Stomach to Regain Life's Vitality

To those who have suffered from Damjeok disease for a long time, I want to tell you that there is ample possibility of recovery.

Of course, as it is a problem accumulated over a long period, time and effort are required until a body exhausted by Damjeok disease fully recovers.

However, through consistent traditional Korean medicine treatment and improved lifestyle habits, you can certainly regain a healthy digestive system and a vibrant life.

As Damjeok disease has a strong chronic tendency, it is important not to feel impatient or give up midway through the treatment process.

In the early stages of treatment, symptoms may seem to improve and then worsen again.

This is a natural phenomenon that can occur during the body's recovery process, so it is necessary to communicate consistently with your medical team and approach treatment from a long-term perspective.

I will closely monitor and communicate with patients as their conditions change, helping them move in the right direction.

You too, please listen to the signals your body sends and bravely take charge of your recovery.

I promise to be a humble companion to help you regain a vibrant daily life.

My clinic always keeps the doors of hope open.

I hope we can walk this journey together and build a healthy life.
