Clicking Sounds in Your Jaw? | Incheon TMJ Disorder

That unfamiliar sound you hear every time you open your mouth. The 'click, click' sound resonating from your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) every time you open your mouth. At first, you might have dismissed it as nothing significant, but before you know it, there comes a moment when you hesitate even to yawn or laugh out loud.

“Every time I eat, there's a sound, and I worry about other people hearing it. On days when my jaw feels stiff, I even get headaches.”

The minor noise from your TMJ isn't just a simple sound. It's the first signal that the balance of your temporomandibular joint, one of the most intricate joints in our body, has begun to shift – a signal that should never be ignored.

The 'Cushion' Out of Place, and Pain

Inside our temporomandibular joint is a soft cushion called a 'disc,' which absorbs shock between the bones. Thanks to this intricate cushion, we can move our jaw freely. However, if habits like unconsciously clenching your teeth, chewing food only on one side, or resting your chin on your hand are repeated, this 'cushion' can become displaced.

The 'click' sound you hear every time you open your mouth is precisely this cushion moving out of place and then back into position. If this condition persists and the cushion wears away completely, the bones will directly rub against each other, causing excruciating pain along with a grinding sound, like sand being ground.

'Obstructed Channels' and 'Tangled Knots'

In traditional Korean medicine (TKM), it is believed that numerous *Gyeongrak* (經絡), or 'channels of energy flow' (meridians), run through our face and head. Particularly, the area around the temporomandibular joint is where overall body fatigue and stress tend to accumulate most easily. Excessive stress blocks the flow in these 'channels' and creates tight 'knots' in the surrounding muscles and ligaments.

This is the fundamental cause of jaw stiffness, and the related shoulder stiffness and headaches. Therefore, TKM treatment does not solely focus on the TMJ issue itself. Through an integrated approach, acupuncture treatment opens the 'obstructed channels' to facilitate the circulation of *Qi* (life energy) and blood, and herbal medicine gently untangles the 'knots' (stress), thereby restoring balance to the temporomandibular joint.

3 Habits to Gift Your TMJ 'Peace'

By simply changing small daily habits, you can significantly reduce the burden on your temporomandibular joint.

  1. Give your jaw 'rest'. Chewy or hard foods (like squid or *kkakdugi* (diced radish kimchi)) are like overworking your TMJ. When eating, cut food into small pieces and chew gently with your molars.
  2. Take time for 'relaxation'. If you unconsciously clench your teeth, try practicing consciously separating your lips slightly and relaxing all the muscles in your face. Applying a warm compress to the jaw area can also help relieve tension.
  3. Maintain a correct 'posture'. Habits like resting your chin on your hand or sleeping on your side are major culprits in disrupting TMJ balance. Consciously striving to maintain correct posture protects the health of your jaw.

Will You Let 'Noise' Grow into 'Chronic Pain'?

The small sounds coming from your jaw are often neglected because they might not cause immediate discomfort. However, these sounds are your body's 'golden hour' signal. Ignoring this signal leads down a path where the joint disc wears away completely, making it difficult to open your mouth, or where chronic headaches and facial asymmetry continuously degrade your quality of life.

On the other hand, seriously acknowledging this signal and addressing the underlying imbalance in its early stages is the wisest path to prevent greater pain and joint damage in the future, and to regain a 'quiet, comfortable daily life'. That choice is yours, now.
