Hello, this is Baengnokdam Korean Medicine Clinic.

It feels like there's a fog in my head.

It feels like someone set off a fog machine in my head.

My thoughts aren't clear, and I quickly forget what I just heard. It's a word I definitely know, but it just hovers on my tongue and won't come out.

"It wasn't like this before, but lately, when I read a book, the words don't seem to register in my mind; they just float on the surface. I keep forgetting things, and I feel like I've become a fool."

What is Brain Fog?

Brain fog is not merely intensified forgetfulness. It slowly steals away your sharp cognitive abilities, making work, learning, and even everyday conversations difficult. It is a clear signal from your body that your cognitive function is declining.

Analogy of a Computer and the Brain

Your 'computer' isn't broken; its 'performance' has simply degraded. We can compare our brain to a high-performance computer's Central Processing Unit (CPU). A healthy brain processes vast amounts of information quickly and clearly. Brain fog isn't a sign that the CPU itself is broken, but rather that its performance has temporarily plummeted due to various reasons. It's like a computer overheating, running low on memory (RAM), or slowing down because too many unnecessary programs are running.

Causes of Brain Fog

Chronic inflammation in the body, severe stress, sleep deprivation, and nutritional imbalances are among the most representative causes that degrade our brain's performance. The CPU itself is normal, but there's an issue with the power supply or cooling system.

Traditional Korean Medicine Approach

In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), our clear mind (神, Shen) is likened to a clean and transparent 'window pane'. Brain fog is seen as a state where this window pane is thickly fogged up with 'dameum (痰飮)', which represents unnecessary waste products and dampness in the body. This sticky, turbid dameum obstructs the path of clear energy ascending to the head, making thoughts heavy and sluggish.

Treatment Methods

Therefore, TKM treatment does not merely involve prescribing medicines to clear the head, but rather focuses on a fundamental approach of 'wiping the fog off the window pane (祛痰開竅, dispelling phlegm and opening the orifices)' and 'regulating internal dampness (健脾燥濕, strengthening the spleen and drying dampness)' to prevent refogging, thereby helping the brain restore its clear and sharp state on its own.

3 Habits to Clear the Fog and Awaken Your Brain

Habit 1: Brain-Healthy Diet (Brain Food)

Consistently consuming omega-3 rich fatty fish or nuts, essential for brain function, along with antioxidant-rich berries and green leafy vegetables, helps maintain brain health.

Habit 2: Sleep Quality

Sleep is the most crucial time for the brain to clear out waste products accumulated throughout the day. More than just sleeping for a long time, going to bed at the same time each day and getting deep, quality sleep is essential for brain recovery.

Habit 3: Simple Stimulation

Multitasking, which involves doing several things at once, causes brain overload. Instead, simple activities that focus on one task (reading a book, meditation, walking) can be more effective in organizing complex thoughts and restoring cognitive function.

Brain Fog as a Warning Sign

Symptoms of a dull and sluggish mind, often referred to as 'fog in the head,' are easily dismissed as merely being 'tired' and left unaddressed, allowing the 'fog in the head' to potentially spread into 'overcast clouds throughout the entire body'. However, brain fog is not just a problem with the head; it is a very important warning sign indicating the presence of 'chronic imbalance' somewhere in your body.

Ignoring this warning can lead to a deeper 'overcast cloud throughout the entire body', such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, or other autoimmune diseases. However, now, the path to clearing the fog from your head by examining the problems of your entire body goes beyond simply regaining focus; it is the wisest choice to prevent the progression to more serious illnesses and protect your healthy future.
