Reasons Why Menopause Medication Doesn't Work for You: Is It Just Because You're 'Sensitive'?
Hello, this is Baekrokdam Korean Medicine Clinic.
1. "I'm sweating profusely, feeling sudden heat, and can't sleep."
“When I lie down to sleep, heat rushes up and my head feels flushed. I keep sweating so much that I kick off my blanket multiple times. If I wake up at night, I can't fall back asleep easily. The hospital told me it was menopause and prescribed hormone therapy, but... I felt nauseous, and my chest felt tight... After taking it a few times, I just couldn't continue.”
We hear stories like this very often in the clinic. It's one of the most common menopausal symptoms.
But the problem is that simply explaining it as 'feeling hot' or 'hormone deficiency' cannot fully explain this discomfort.
2. Not All Menopausal Hot Flashes Are Alike
The core of menopausal symptoms is vasomotor symptoms. In other words, the rhythm of vascular dilation and constriction is disrupted. Representative symptoms are as follows:
- Sudden rush of heat (hot flash)
- Sweating spreading around the face, chest, and neck
- Chills appearing as the heat subsides
- Night sweats that wake you from sleep
All these symptoms are related to the autonomic nervous system. However, some people find their symptoms easily managed with medication, while for others, it makes their body feel even more uncomfortable.
3. Medication Doesn't Suit Everyone — And It's Not Because There's Anything 'Wrong' with Your Body
HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) prescribed by doctors is a quite effective treatment for menopausal symptoms. However, there are people who exhibit the following reactions:
- "After taking the medication, my stomach felt even worse."
- "My heart was pounding, and I felt even more anxious."
- "I took it a few times, but my body reacted too sensitively."
What these people often hear is, "'You're just sensitive,' or 'It will get better with time.'" But is that really the case?
This isn't just a simple drug side effect but could be the body's defense system signaling, 'I can't regulate this right now.'
4. This Reaction Through the Lens of Korean Medicine — 'False Heat' and 'Deficiency of Body Fluids'
In Korean medicine, these symptoms are diagnosed as 'false heat rising upwards' (虛熱上逆), 'heart heat disturbing the spirit' (心熱犯神), 'kidney yin deficiency' (腎陰虛), etc. In other words, although it seems like heat is rising externally, it's actually due to an internal deficiency of body fluids (Jin-ye), resulting in a loss of the ability to regulate it.
Furthermore, when combined with autonomic nervous system dysregulation, the body cannot escape from an excited state, much like a car without brakes. The nocturnal heat surges can also be understood as damage to this 'braking function,' because the nerves that allow the body to rest are unable to function.
5. Treatment Is About Restoring Flow, Not Suppression
In such cases, simply using 'medication to suppress heat' might help reduce uncomfortable symptoms, but it cannot restore the body's overall flow itself.
Korean medical treatment is designed around the following:
- Regulating Wei Qi (Protective Qi) Circulation: stabilizing body temperature rhythm and autonomic nervous system.
- Supplementing Jin-ye (body fluids/yin fluid): restoring Kidney Yin deficiency and alleviating false heat.
- Calming the Mind and Body: reducing heat sensations that wake you at night and restoring sleep depth.
- Customizing Treatment Based on Constitution: personalized prescriptions according to detailed patterns like Liver Heat, Heart Fire, Phlegm-Fire, etc.
And what's important is, "not viewing the body's reactions as wrong, but interpreting them differently."
6. It's Not About Being Sensitive; It Means Your Body's Reactions Are Alive
Menopause does not manifest in the same way for everyone. While some people respond well to medication, there are clearly others who do not.
Some might say, "Everyone goes through that at that age," or "Just get through it." But how can one simply "get through it" when they can't sleep, their heart is pounding, and they're profusely sweating?
Korean herbal medicine treatment is not about forced suppression. It is a method of re-interpreting and re-calibrating the signals your body sends.
If, at this moment, your body is too distressed for you to sleep, it might be a state where the complex rhythms of your body are out of sync, and cannot be simply explained by the term 'menopause.'
