My Face Suddenly Turns Red | Incheon Facial Flushing
Table of Contents
Hello, this is Baekrokdam Korean Medicine Clinic.
Even with just a little tension or embarrassment, or with exercise or changes in temperature, my face heats up and turns red first, completely beyond my control. These are embarrassing moments, as if all my emotions are being broadcast live on my face.
“Whenever I give a presentation at a meeting, my face feels like it’s on fire. I feel like everyone is staring at my face, which makes my confidence drop, and it’s so hard to concentrate on the discussion.”
Facial flushing is not simply a phenomenon of the face turning red. It's a problem linked to self-esteem, making me shrink back in important moments and feel frustrated that I can’t control my emotions.
Causes and Symptoms
The 'Rubber Bands' of the Face: Stretched and Lacking Elasticity
Beneath the skin of our face are countless microvessels. They are like sophisticated 'rubber bands' that repeatedly contract and expand. Normally, these 'rubber bands' stretch and contract according to the situation, constantly regulating blood flow and temperature in the face.
However, facial flushing is a condition where these 'rubber bands' lose their elasticity, stretching too easily and excessively. Even with minor emotional changes or temperature stimuli, the 'rubber bands' stretch beyond their limit, causing more blood than necessary to rush to the face. This is the fundamental reason why the face becomes red and a hot, burning sensation is felt.
Korean Medicine Perspective
A House with a Broken 'Heating System'
In Korean medicine, we diagnose the body as a 'house' and facial flushing as a 'broken heating system' within this house. All the warm energy surges upwards, making the face and head hot (Sangyeol, 上熱), while the hands, feet, and lower abdomen, which should be warm, become cold—a state known as 'Sangyeolhahan' (上熱下寒, upper heat, lower cold).
The biggest cause of this imbalance is 'traffic congestion' (Gi-che, 氣滯), which obstructs the body's overall energy circulation due to stress and other factors. When the path is blocked, heat (Hwa, 火) that has nowhere to go rises upwards. Therefore, Korean medicine treatment is not simply about cooling the heat in the face. It aims to resolve this 'traffic congestion' to facilitate smooth circulation throughout the body, draw the rising heat back down, and focus on 'warming the entire house evenly'—that is, restoring the body's disrupted thermal energy balance.
Lifestyle Management
3 Habits to Manage Facial 'Heat'
It's necessary to avoid 'heat' that stimulates the face in daily life and to have the wisdom to manage the 'heat' of the mind.
Habit 1: Minimize Temperature Changes (Temperature Buffer)
Avoid environments that cause rapid temperature changes, such as jjimjilbangs (Korean dry saunas) or saunas. It's also recommended to wear a mask when moving between indoors and outdoors in winter to mitigate the temperature shock felt by the skin.
Habit 2: Avoid Stimulating Foods (Diet Control)
Spicy and hot foods, alcohol, and caffeine are the most common factors that directly dilate blood vessels. If you experience flushing symptoms, please avoid these foods for a while.
Habit 3: Practice Emotional Regulation (Emotional Calming)
Tension and anxiety are the most powerful switches that send heat to the face. Let go of expectations about the outcome, and before important moments, calm your mind first through deep diaphragmatic breathing.
Prognosis and Golden Time
Before 'emotional flushing' progresses to 'Rosacea (colloquially 'strawberry nose')': If 'emotional flushing,' where the face temporarily turns red, is neglected, the dilated blood vessels completely lose their elasticity and cannot contract back to their original state. At the end of this path, the face remains persistently red, and telangiectasia (spider veins) and Rosacea, with visible thread-like capillaries, await.
Once blood vessels are dilated and damaged, it is very difficult to reverse them. It's crucial to manage the condition before it progresses beyond mere facial redness to structural changes in the skin. To prevent current 'emotional flushing' from becoming a lifelong 'strawberry nose' (Rosacea), you must not miss the 'golden time' to preserve the elasticity of your blood vessels.
