Adult Atopic Dermatitis: What Are the Early Symptoms?

Hello, I am Choi Yeon-seung, the head director of Baengnokdam Korean Medicine Clinic. It is not uncommon for atopic dermatitis to develop only after adulthood. Many people become anxious when unusual skin symptoms suddenly appear, wondering, 'Could this be atopic dermatitis?' Today, let's take a closer look at the characteristics of early-stage adult atopic dermatitis.

1. Dry Skin and Itching: Classic Symptoms of Adult Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is prevalent in infancy and early childhood, but it often first develops in adults as well. The most common early symptoms include dry skin, itching, and red patches. These are sometimes referred to as 'DAE' (Dry, Atopic, Erythema).

"My face suddenly became dry and started itching. When I looked in the mirror, my cheeks seemed a bit flushed. Could I have atopic dermatitis?"

2. Symptoms Often Appear on Exposed Areas Like the Face, Neck, and Hands

"I thought atopic dermatitis first appears in skin folds, like the creases of the arms and legs, but my symptoms are different. My face and neck are itchy and red."

While infantile atopic dermatitis often starts in the skin folds of the arms and legs, in adults, symptoms tend to appear first on exposed areas like the face, neck, and hands. Eyelids may swell, the skin may darken, or red patches may appear around the lips.

3. Symptoms Worsen with Stress or Seasonal Changes

"My itching seems to have gotten worse lately due to work stress. My skin also gets drier as the seasons change. It's only early-stage, but I'm already worried."

Adult atopic dermatitis tends to react sensitively to factors like stress, lack of sleep, alcohol consumption, and smoking. Increased levels of ACTH, a type of stress hormone, promote the secretion of inflammatory substances, thereby exacerbating itching.

4. Other Allergic Diseases May Accompany It

Approximately 50% of atopic dermatitis patients are known to also suffer from allergic rhinitis, asthma, conjunctivitis, and other conditions. If symptoms such as nasal membrane swelling, clear nasal discharge, and frequent sneezing accompany dry skin and itching, atopic dermatitis should be suspected.

5. If Left Untreated, Dermatitis Can Become Chronic

"Honestly, when I first noticed the early symptoms of atopic dermatitis, I didn't think much of it. I just assumed my skin was dry. But gradually, the symptoms worsened, and I saw my skin thickening and flaking."

In its early stages, atopic dermatitis symptoms are often mild and easily overlooked. However, if not managed promptly, it can follow a course of recurring exacerbations and improvements, gradually becoming chronic. The skin may develop hyperpigmentation due to scratching and can become lichenified and hardened.

6. Korean Medicine Aims to Improve Constitutional Balance and Immune Regulation

"It felt like Western medicine only suppressed symptoms, so I sought out a Korean medicine clinic. Is there a fundamental treatment method that's right for me?"

Treatment for adult atopic dermatitis focuses on improving the damaged skin barrier and breaking the vicious cycle of hypersensitive immune responses. In Korean medicine, we strive to improve the patient's constitution through individualized treatment based on pattern differentiation.

7. Symptom Management Must Be Combined with Lifestyle Modifications

As atopic dermatitis is a chronic condition that is difficult to treat in the short term, consistent management is essential. It is important to use appropriate moisturizers and to avoid scratching. Avoiding skin irritants, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep to manage your overall condition are also beneficial.
