Hello, everyone. Today, I'd like to talk about Bell's palsy, one of the concerns I frequently encounter among patients in my clinic. As if only half the face is smiling, Bell's palsy significantly impacts patients psychologically. Many of you may have suddenly looked in the mirror one day and exclaimed, 'What is this?'

First Encounter with Myself in the Mirror, The Shock

Those who experience Bell's palsy symptoms for the first time are usually taken by surprise. The moment they wake up and look in the mirror, they might ask, 'Is this really me?' and touch their face repeatedly. They wonder why their face, which was perfectly fine just yesterday, has changed so much, leading to many worries and questions.

The First Question, 'Why is This Happening to Me?'

'Why is this happening to me?' This is the first question most patients ask. Bell's palsy can arise from various causes, primarily viral infections, stress, or immune issues. Our body is a complex system, and problems often result from a combination of factors rather than a single cause.

Bell's Palsy from the Perspective of Korean Medicine, Its Fundamental Approach

In Korean medicine, Bell's palsy is not viewed merely as a problem with facial muscles. It is interpreted as an invasion of 'Wind' (風), resulting from an imbalance of the body's Qi (氣) and Blood (血), as well as Yin (陰) and Yang (陽). It's like our body being startled by a sudden cold wind, causing one side of the face to stiffen.

Stress, The Invisible Enemy

Many people identify stress as one of the primary causes of Bell's palsy. Stress accumulated in a busy daily life can, at some point, disrupt the body's balance, manifesting as Bell's palsy. This is a typical example of how emotional distress can manifest physically.

How is Treatment Carried Out?

This is likely the part patients are most curious about. In Korean medicine, treatment involves various methods such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and moxibustion. Acupuncture, in particular, is very effective in restoring balance by regulating the flow of Qi and Blood. Naturally, an individualized treatment plan will be devised according to the patient's condition and constitution.

Return to Daily Life, and Management

Consistent management is required even after treatment. It is crucial to manage stress and maintain regular lifestyle habits and a healthy diet. Finding peace of mind through relaxation activities like meditation or yoga is also a good approach. Bell's palsy is undoubtedly a difficult experience, but it can also be an opportunity to listen to the signals our body sends and reflect on ourselves. Take some time to ponder, 'What does my body want, and how am I living my life?'

We are always here to help you regain your healthy smile. We will always listen to your stories. Have a healthy and happy day!
