Are there specific diet and weight loss methods tailored to my Sasang Constitution?

Yes, because metabolic rates and organ vulnerabilities differ by constitution, tailoring your diet and exercise routine to your specific type is the most effective approach.

Every individual is born with different strengths and weaknesses among their internal organs. This is why two people can follow the same calorie-restricted diet and exercise plan, yet one loses weight quickly while the other feels depleted of energy and gives up. Based on clinical experience, unconditional dietary restriction can actually be counterproductive.

In Traditional Korean Medicine, we address this through the Sasang Constitution (四象體質), as energy metabolism pathways vary by type.

  • Tae-eumin: Due to a strong absorptive capacity, they are prone to the accumulation of Dam-eum (痰飮), or metabolic waste. High-intensity exercise that induces profuse sweating is most effective.
  • Soyang-in: Often characterized by excessive internal heat and weaker kidney function, which can make appetite control difficult. A cooling diet and stable, lower-body-focused exercise are recommended.
  • So-eumin: Frequently experience Bi-heo (脾虛), or deficiency of the Spleen/Digestive system. Rather than rigorous fasting, priority should be given to warm, easily digestible foods and light physical activity.
  • Taeyang-in: Tend to have energy that rises upward. Meditation to calm the mind and exercises that strengthen the lower body are most suitable.
💡 Key Principle of Treatment

The goal is not simply to reduce body weight, but to achieve metabolic balance by supplementing constitutionally deficient energy and clearing excess metabolic waste.
