Whenever I get stressed, I can't stop binge eating. How does Korean medicine treat this?

In Korean medicine, stress-related binge eating is viewed as a Liver–Spleen imbalance. For the first 1–2 weeks, treatment focuses on soothing Liver Qi to reduce cravings and make impulses easier to control. From weeks 3–4, therapy shifts to tonifying the Spleen so that satiety lasts longer and portion control feels natural. With consistent herbal medicine, acupuncture, and dietary guidance for about 1–2 months, most patients find they no longer automatically reach for food when stressed.
I know exactly how that feels—I remember my own hands drifting toward snacks during stressful late nights at work, so I truly empathize. In Korean medicine, this pattern is called Liver Qi Stagnation (Gan Qi Yu Jie). When stress accumulates in the Liver, it obstructs the free flow of Qi; this eventually weakens the Spleen, the organ system that governs digestion and transformation. In TKM, this weakened state is called Spleen Deficiency (Pi Xu). Once Spleen function declines, your natural appetite regulation and sensation of fullness become disrupted. Treatment begins with herbal formulas that soothe the Liver and regulate Qi, which softens the immediate impulse to overeat. Acupuncture is given together to stabilize the autonomic nervous system. After about one week, patients often notice a subtle shift—a feeling that they 'don't really need to eat that right now.' Around the second to third week, the prescription shifts to Spleen-tonifying herbs that restore digestive power and bring back a lasting feeling of satiety. As this balance returns, binge episodes become less frequent and portions naturally shrink. After roughly a month, many patients find they no longer sprint to the refrigerator the moment stress rises. We do not simply tell you to 'just resist.' In Korean medicine, when the body feels comfortable first, the mind follows. Because individual constitutions differ, some people respond in 2–3 weeks, while others may need up to two months of consistent care.
