How does weight management typically proceed at a Korean medicine clinic? I'm curious about what happens on the first visit.
The approach varies depending on the patient's condition. Whether it is a 'Spleen Deficiency (Bi Xu)' type with weak digestive function or a 'Blood Stasis (Yu Xue)' type with circulation disorders, the prescription and lifestyle management differ significantly. First, through consultation and pulse diagnosis, the constitution and symptoms are identified, then customized herbal medicine along with dietary and exercise guidance are provided. Please refer to the detailed explanation below for specific steps.
On your first visit, we will have a thorough consultation lasting about 30 minutes to an hour. We carefully listen to your constitution, lifestyle patterns, past weight management experiences, and any current discomforts. Then, through pulse diagnosis (maekjin) and tongue diagnosis (seoljin), we assess underlying conditions such as Spleen Deficiency (Bi Xu) or Blood Stasis (Yu Xue). From there, cases largely fall into two categories. First, the Spleen Deficiency type — characterized by post-meal bloating, loose stools, and easy fatigue. In this case, we strengthen the Spleen's function to better transform food into energy. Second, the Blood Stasis type — characterized by a heavy feeling in the body, poor blood circulation with coldness or pain. Here, we improve blood flow to facilitate waste removal. For both types, herbal medicine is prescribed based on the individual pattern and adjusted every 2–4 weeks. Alongside, we recommend dietary adjustments and lifestyle modifications, always focusing on sustainable approaches rather than extreme fasting or excessive exercise. I personally used to make the mistake of just eating very little, but I learned that restoring the body's function itself is the priority. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
