1. Soaked Hands and Feet, Every Day Feels Like a Battle

"My hands often slip with sweat when I shake hands, which can be embarrassing. I also worry about my socks getting soaked in my shoes and causing an odor. Sweating makes it difficult to write or exercise."

Palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis refers to the condition of excessive sweating in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. This is when the hands and feet uniquely sweat excessively without a specific reason, even when it's not a hot summer day or during exercise. They become so soaked that it makes shaking hands or walking barefoot uncomfortable, often causing significant inconvenience in daily life.

2. The Body's Signals Reflected in Excessive Sweating

In Traditional Korean Medicine, palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis is described using terms like 手足汗濕 (meaning 'sweaty and damp hands and feet') or 手足膠冷 (meaning 'sticky and cold hands and feet'). It is primarily considered to arise from functional imbalances of the Lung (肺), Spleen (脾), and Kidney (腎) organ systems. An imbalance of Yin and Yang (陰陽) is believed to lead to excessive sweating in the hands and feet.

3. The Art of Herbal Medicine in Managing Sweat

The foundation of herbal medicine treatment for palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis involves strengthening the Spleen and dispelling Dampness (健脾祛濕) and tonifying Qi and consolidating the exterior (補氣固表). This means enhancing the Spleen's transportation and transformation function (脾의 運化 기능) to expel Dampness (濕), and strengthening the Lung's dispersing and descending functions (肺의 宣發肅降 작용) to fortify the Protective Qi (衛氣).

4. Acupuncture and Moxibustion for Regulating Sweat Glands and Meridians

Acupuncture treatment is effective in inhibiting excessive sympathetic nervous system excitement and reducing sweat gland activity, thereby decreasing perspiration. Stimulating acupoints on the hands and feet belonging to the flow (流注) of the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian (手太陰肺經) and Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian (足太陰脾經) can specifically help to facilitate local fluid metabolism and regulate sweat gland secretion.

5. Practicing Daily Sweat Management

In addition to acupuncture and moxibustion treatment, improving lifestyle habits is also essential. Firstly, it's important to focus on stress management. Try to calm your mind a few times a day through deep breathing or meditation. Don't forget to relax tension through regular exercise and achieve emotional stability through healthy hobbies.

6. The Energy of Vitality Created by Healthy Sweating

"My constantly sweaty hands and feet made me feel incredibly embarrassed. But after taking herbal medicine and managing it well, the sweating in my hands and feet significantly decreased in just six months. Now I feel confident when shaking hands and exercising."

There was a time when even holding someone's hand or walking barefoot felt daunting. Those must have been days of despair you never want to experience again. But don't give up; there is always hope.
