- More Than Just Gas: It Could Be a Sign of Something More
Have you ever broken out in a cold sweat trying to hold back a burp in a quiet meeting room? How about the anxious moments in an elevator, fearing you might pass gas?
Like this, constant, untimely gas can lead to many uncomfortable and embarrassing moments in daily life. Many people simply dismiss it as 'just indigestion,' but this frequent gas could be an important 'signal' from our digestive system. Could there be a larger problem hidden beneath?
Hello, I am Dr. Yeonseung Choi, director of Baengnokdam Korean Medicine Clinic, who has been diagnosing and treating countless patients with gas symptoms for 15 years. If you read this article to the end today, you will no longer have to hide in embarrassment. You will discover the true causes of frequent burping and flatulence, and straightforward solutions to relieve these uncomfortable symptoms.
My Body's 'Gas Factory,' Why Does It Operate 24/7?
Let's imagine our body as a 'gas factory.' This factory has three main production lines.
Line 1. The Main Culprit Behind Frequent Burping: 'Swallowed Air'
A significant portion of burps that occur immediately after meals is not actually gas produced from food digestion. It's the phenomenon of 'air' that you unconsciously swallow when eating quickly, chewing gum, or using a straw, being expelled again. This is called aerophagia. It's like a factory that doesn't need to be running, but too much raw material (air) comes in, so it has to be sent back out.
Line 2. The Cause of Foul-Smelling Burps: 'Food Putrefaction in the Stomach'
When digestive function is weakened, food remains in the stomach for too long. While lingering in the warm stomach, the food slowly begins to putrefy, generating foul-smelling gas. This is why, when this gas rises as a burp, an unpleasant food odor accompanies it.
Line 3. The Cause of Pungent Flatulence: 'Over-fermentation by Intestinal Bacteria'
Flatulence is primarily produced in the 'intestines.' In particular, 'High-FODMAP' foods become the main raw material for this production line. FODMAPs, abundant in beans, garlic, onions, and wheat flour, are not absorbed in the small intestine and travel to the large intestine, becoming a 'special food source' for intestinal bacteria. These bacteria consume and break down these foods, producing large quantities of hydrogen, methane gas, and other gases, which directly cause pungent flatulence and abdominal bloating.
Q. My burps and flatulence smell very bad. Does this indicate a serious health problem?
A. The smell itself can vary depending on the types of food consumed (especially protein, and sulfur-containing vegetables). However, if the smell suddenly becomes very strong and is accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain or diarrhea, it could be a sign that the intestinal environment has rapidly deteriorated, requiring careful attention.
Escaping Energy: A Sign That Our Body's 'Flow' is Blocked
In Korean medicine, burping and flatulence are not simply viewed as 'air,' but rather as an imbalance in the circulation of our body's energy, or 'Qi (氣).'"
1. Cause of Burping - Stomach Qi Counterflow (胃氣上逆)
Normally, the Qi of the Stomach (胃氣) should flow downwards to move food, so a downward direction is its natural flow. However, if digestive function weakens, or if Qi becomes stagnant due to stress, this flow reverses, surging upwards. This is called Stomach Qi Counterflow (胃氣上逆). Just as a stream meant to flow downwards might splash upwards when blocked by a rock, burping and dry heaving are signs that the Stomach Qi is refluxing.
2. Cause of Flatulence - Liver Qi Stagnation (肝氣鬱結) & Spleen and Stomach Deficiency (脾胃虛弱)
Frequent flatulence is largely attributed to two causes. The first is Liver Qi Stagnation, a problem stemming from stress. When the Liver's Qi (肝) becomes stagnant due to stress, this stagnant Qi presses on the intestines (腸), causing abdominal gurgling and producing gas. In such cases, it is often accompanied by abdominal pain.
The second is Spleen and Stomach Deficiency, meaning the digestive system itself is weak. A weak digestive system cannot process food properly, leading to an accumulation of unnecessary waste products called 'Dampness-Phlegm (濕痰).' As these waste products putrefy, gas is generated. In such cases, the flatulence odor can become even more pungent.
Now that we understand the causes, shall we explore ways to correct these blocked and twisted Qi flows?
1. Swallow Less 'Air'
If you suffer from frequent burping, the first step is to review your eating habits.
- Eat slowly and chew thoroughly: Eating too quickly can lead to swallowing a large amount of air.
- Reduce gum chewing and carbonated drinks: Habits like chewing gum or drinking carbonated beverages inject unnecessary air into the stomach.
- Avoid using straws: Air can easily enter along with your drink when using a straw.
2. Avoid 'Gas-Inducing Foods'
If pungent flatulence is a concern, it is effective to reduce foods that serve as 'fuel' for intestinal bacteria. This refers to the Low-FODMAP diet, which has been emphasized several times earlier. Particularly, legumes, wheat flour, dairy products, as well as garlic, onions, and cabbage are representative foods that produce a lot of gas, so it's advisable to temporarily avoid them when symptoms are severe.
3. Drink Beneficial Teas That Aid 'Gas Expulsion'
Drinking teas that soothe the stomach and aid gas expulsion is also an excellent method.
- Peppermint Tea: It is one of the most effective teas for relieving excessive stomach tension and alleviating abdominal bloating caused by gas.
- Chamomile Tea: It helps soothe the stomach and reduce gas production caused by stress.
4. Abdominal Massage and Exercise
If you feel gas lingering and not expelling from your abdomen, it's beneficial to get moving.
- Clockwise Massage: Before falling asleep, warm your palms by rubbing them together, then gently massage around your navel in a clockwise direction.
- Light Walking: Exercise promotes intestinal peristalsis, helping gas naturally move downwards and be expelled.
These small habits will reduce embarrassing moments and help you regain comfortable days.
More Than Just Gas: It Could Be a Sign of Something More
Of course, everyone burps and passes gas occasionally. These are natural physiological phenomena. However, if accompanied by 'warning signs' such as those listed below, it may not be a simple functional issue, and it is highly advisable to undergo a thorough examination at a hospital.
- Severe abdominal pain
- Unexplained weight loss
- Loss of appetite
- Sudden changes in bowel habits (e.g., bloody stools)
Even without these warning signs, if frequent gas leads to social withdrawal and a reduced quality of life, you should no longer simply endure the 'embarrassment.' This is the 'golden time' to find and address the root cause in your body.
In particular, chronic gas that isn't resolved by the lifestyle adjustments discussed today could be an important sign of Damjeok-byeong (積病), a condition where the stomach stiffens. If the opportunity arises soon, I will delve into the relationship between 'Damjeok' and gas in more detail.
Frequent burping and flatulence are valuable signals from your body. Do not hide them in embarrassment any longer; accurately understand the meaning of these signals and reclaim a comfortable and confident daily life.
