Korean herbal topical preparations play an important role in providing psychological comfort to patients with skin conditions. Especially in cases of severe itching, the act of applying the topical preparation itself can offer a sense of stability. There is a need for alternative topical preparations to reduce dependence on steroid ointments, which contributes to their high re-prescription rate.

Major Korean Herbal Topical Preparations

  • Jaungo: Primarily used for skin moisturizing and conditioning. The focus is on hydration rather than inflammatory conditions.
  • Indigo Ointment (Cheongdaego/Cheongdae Ointment): Growing interest in its use for psoriasis and eczematous skin conditions.
  • Others: There are various other topical preparations such as Seupjingo, Ilhwang-go, etc.
Exploring the efficacy and safety of topical Jaungo application in patients with atopic dermatitis: A pilot randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

In studies on the effectiveness of Jaungo, the control group also showed good results, attributed to the beeswax and oils used as the base for moisturizing creams or ointments. This is because Korean herbal topical preparations are fundamentally composed of a wax and oil base with a combination of several herbal ingredients. Consequently, their moisturizing function alone helps the skin barrier.

Allergic Reactions and Sensitivity

Problems may arise due to allergic reactions or sensitive skin while using Korean herbal topical preparations. In such cases, changing the type of ointment or trying different approaches may be necessary.

Indigo Ointment and Psoriasis Treatment

Recent research on Indigo Ointment is underway, and related ointments can be found by searching "indigo naturalis ointment" on Amazon. Its recognition is also increasing in Korea, and it is gaining attention as an alternative to steroid ointments.

Korean herbal topical preparations can play an important role in reducing dependence on steroid ointments and improving skin barrier function. Further research on this is necessary.
