A heavy lower abdomen for days, are you once again reaching for laxatives? You tell yourself 'Just this one time...', but I deeply understand that frustrating and anxious feeling of your bowels refusing to move without medication. You make sure to eat dietary fiber, try popular probiotics, and diligently drink water. But if all these efforts are in vain, the problem might not just be 'blocked' bowels, but rather 'paralyzed' bowels. And behind that paralysis, a 'specific gas' that we never imagined is hidden.
Hello, I am Choi Yeon-seung, a doctor of Korean medicine who has helped countless patients suffering from 'Atonic Bowel' and 'SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)' – many of whom depended on laxatives for 15 years – regain their natural bowel function.
By reading this post to the end today, you will discover why your bowels have stopped moving, and the true cause of that persistent constipation and gas. And I promise that you will find a way to solve this problem using your own strength, without relying on laxatives anymore.
'Simple Constipation' vs. 'Bowel Paralysis': What type is your constipation?
Not all constipation is the same. The solution must be completely different depending on the cause and condition. 'Simple constipation,' which occurs temporarily when traveling, experiencing stress, or eating unfamiliar foods, is relatively common and can often be resolved quickly with lifestyle changes. However, it's highly likely that your current struggles go beyond 'simple constipation'.
If two or more of the following items apply to you, it could be a strong sign that your bowels are not merely blocked, but in a state of 'paralysis' – specifically, 'Atonic Bowel'.
'Atonic Bowel' Self-Diagnosis Checklist
- 1. The 'signal' or urge to use the restroom has been completely absent for days.
- 2. Even when you try to go to the restroom, you strain without feeling the stool move downwards.
- 3. It's difficult to even imagine, and you feel anxious about, going to the restroom without laxatives.
- 4. Rather than the stool being extremely hard, it feels more like your bowels simply 'don't want to move'.
- 5. Your abdomen is bloated and feels like it's about to burst with gas, but oddly, no stool comes out.
If this checklist doesn't sound like someone else's story, then you need to find the answer to the fundamental question: not 'What should I eat?', but 'Why have my bowels stopped moving?'
The Engine of Your Bowels Has Stalled: The Culprit Was 'Methane Gas' (feat. SIBO)
If you've confirmed through the checklist that your bowels are likely in a 'paralyzed' state, it's time to delve into the cause. Why have your bowels lost their strength, leading to this worst-case scenario of gas accumulation? At the heart of it is a vicious cycle where 'Atonic Bowel' and 'Methane SIBO' continuously feed into each other.
Step 1: The Bowel's Engine Loses Power (The Onset of Atonic Bowel)
Everything begins with the weakening of bowel peristalsis – the 'engine's power'. For various reasons, the bowels lose their ability to contract and push stool forward. Food waste and metabolic byproducts are unable to be expelled in a timely manner and begin to linger in the intestines for longer periods.
Step 2: 'Bad Tenants' Move Into Stagnant Areas (Methane SIBO Develops)
This stagnant and putrefying environment becomes a prime 'luxury apartment' for certain bacteria. Specifically, 'Methanogens'. The excessive proliferation of these bacteria in the small intestine is precisely what we call 'Methane-dominant SIBO (Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth, IMO)'. These bacteria feed on accumulated food debris in the intestines and continuously emit 'methane gas (CH₄)' as a byproduct. (This is why your abdomen is bloated but no stool comes out.)
Step 3: The Tenants Paralyze the Landlord (The Vicious Cycle Completes)
In the past, methane gas was simply considered a 'component of flatulence'. However, recent research has revealed that methane gas plays a much more powerful role than we previously thought. Namely, it acts directly on intestinal nerves, serving as a 'brake' that inhibits peristalsis.
This completes the worst possible vicious cycle: Reduced bowel motility (Atonic Bowel) ➜ Food stagnation ➜ Methane SIBO development ➜ Methane gas further inhibits bowel motility (intensifying paralysis) ➜ Worsening constipation ➜ (Back to the beginning)
This is precisely why laxatives only offer temporary relief, and over time, your abdomen only becomes more bloated. Even if a tow truck (laxative) temporarily moves the car, it won't be able to drive properly if someone keeps pressing the brake (methane gas).
Why Did the 'Vicious Cycle of Paralysis and Gas' Begin? (Traditional Korean Medicine Perspective)
You've now learned about the terrible vicious cycle of 'Atonic Bowel' and 'Methane SIBO'. Then the next question remains: Why did your bowels lose their strength and fall into this vicious cycle in the first place? Where is the starting point, the root of all these problems?
Cause ①: State of 'Energy Depletion' (Qi Deficiency, 氣虛)
All activities in our body require 'energy'. The vigorous peristaltic movement of the bowels also consumes a tremendous amount of energy. In Traditional Korean Medicine, this fundamental life energy is called 'Qi (氣)'. After chronic overwork, extreme stress, irregular eating habits, or a major illness, our body's 'Qi (氣)' can easily become depleted, leading to a state of 'Qi Deficiency (氣虛)'. When the body's overall energy is insufficient, the strength to move the bowels naturally becomes deficient. This is the primary reason why the bowel's engine stalls.
Cause ②: State of 'Environmental Pollution' (Damjeok, 痰積)
When bowel movement slows down due to 'Qi Deficiency,' undigested food and waste products accumulate in the intestines, putrefy, and form sticky, damp masses. This is called 'Damjeok (痰積)'. It's like grease and debris clinging together in a drain, forming a sticky sludge.
This sticky and damp 'Damjeok' environment is precisely the preferred habitat for methanogens. In other words, at our Korean medicine clinic, we view Methane SIBO as 'Damjeok' – a pathological state that has become measurable with modern scientific technology – and we treat both simultaneously.
Ultimately, Qi (氣) becomes deficient, weakening bowel strength, and the resulting Damjeok (痰積) becomes a breeding ground for methanogens. Unless these two fundamental causes are addressed, the vicious cycle is bound to repeat.
Call a Tow Truck, or Repair the Engine?
Now you stand at a crossroads. Will you continue to call for a 'tow truck (laxatives)' to force movement with external power? Or will you invest time and effort to repair the 'engine (bowels)' and regain the strength to move vigorously on your own?
The fundamental solution to chronic constipation and SIBO must begin not merely by calling a 'tow truck' or temporarily releasing the 'brake (methane gas)' on the engine, but by restoring the engine's inherent power.
Our clinic's treatment aims to replenish depleted energy (Tonify Qi, 補氣), purify the contaminated environment (Damjeok, 痰積) that serves as a breeding ground for bacteria, and thereby cultivate the 'natural vitality' that allows the bowels to move vigorously on their own.
Of course, daily efforts are also very important. Today, we explored the fundamental structure of why the bowel's engine stalls. So, to revive a broken engine, what should we eat and what should we avoid right now?
Next time, I will return with a more practical and interesting topic: 3 Unexpected Foods That Are Worst for Atonic Bowel and Constipation.
Don't suffer in silence anymore. Your bowels can move vigorously again.
