Incheon Reflux Esophagitis
An unpleasant burning sensation and acid regurgitation rise from the center of the chest to the throat. It feels as if something is caught in the throat, and a dry cough without clear cause recurs. Sometimes, upon waking in the morning, the voice is hoarse.
“I'm afraid to lie down. As soon as I lie down to sleep, I get heartburn, and acid comes up, so I often stay awake all night.”
Reflux esophagitis is not just simple heartburn. It's a problem that disrupts the order of daily life, filling even meal times, which should be comfortable, and sleep times, which should be restful, with pain and anxiety.
Causes and Symptoms
When the 'one-way street' rule is broken
Between the esophagus and stomach in our body, there is a strong 'gateway' (sphincter). This gateway opens only when food descends, and normally remains tightly closed, thoroughly preventing strong stomach acid from flowing back up.
It's a perfect 'one-way street' system. However, what happens if the 'locking mechanism' of this gateway weakens or loosens due to poor eating habits, excessive stress, and increased abdominal pressure?
The one-way street rule is broken, and stomach acid and food begin to reflux. The delicate esophageal lining, without a protective barrier, is directly exposed to strong acidity, leading to inflammation and a burning pain. This is the reality of reflux esophagitis.
Traditional Korean Medicine Perspective
Managing 'Qi-reversal (氣逆)', the upward surging energy
In Traditional Korean Medicine, the natural flow (順理) of energy in our body is considered to be downwards, like water, from top to bottom. Reflux esophagitis is a state of 'Qi-reversal (氣逆)', where this natural flow is disrupted, and the Qi (energy) of the stomach (胃氣), which should descend, surges upwards.
It's like a massive dam (stress, accumulated phlegm/food stagnation, 'damjeok') blocking the flow of water, causing it to back up and overflow its surroundings. The biggest causes forming this 'dam' are 'Liver Qi stagnation (肝氣)' due to excessive stress, and 'dampness-phlegm (痰飮)', which are undigested waste products.
Therefore, Traditional Korean Medicine treatment goes beyond simply suppressing stomach acid; it focuses on resolving the stagnated Qi caused by stress to 'open the floodgates of the dam' (So Gan I Gi - 疏肝理氣, soothing the Liver and regulating Qi), and correcting the upward flow of energy downwards.
It aims to resolve the fundamental cause by normalizing the flow of water itself.
Lifestyle Management
3 Defensive Strategies to Prevent Reflux
Correcting daily habits can be the most powerful defense against reflux.
Strategy 1: Dietary Principles (Diet Rule)
Avoid spicy, salty, and greasy foods that excessively stimulate stomach acid secretion, as well as coffee and alcohol. Choose easily digestible foods instead of high-fat foods that remain in the stomach for a long time.
Strategy 2: Posture Habits (Posture Habit)
Lying down immediately after eating is like unlocking the gateway yourself. For at least 2 to 3 hours, sit or stand to allow gravity to aid digestion. When sleeping, it is advisable to slightly elevate your upper body to prevent reflux.
Strategy 3: Pressure Management (Pressure Care)
Tight clothing or belts that constrict the abdomen increase stomach pressure and cause reflux. Wear comfortable clothes and avoid overeating to reduce physical pressure on the stomach.
Prognosis and Golden Time
Will you neglect land corroded by 'acid rain'?
You might think occasional heartburn is fine. However, chronic acid reflux is like 'acid rain' falling daily on delicate, unprotected land (the esophagus).
Land continuously exposed to this acid rain will eventually become inflamed, eroded (esophageal ulcer), and later, the very nature of the land can completely change (Barrett's esophagus). This can be the first step towards serious diseases, beyond just uncomfortable symptoms.
Recognizing this warning sign now and finding a way to stop the 'acid rain' is the wisest choice to protect your precious health from long-term risks.
