Hello, this is Baekrokdam Korean Medicine Clinic.
My Whole Body Aches Continuously, for No Apparent Reason
My whole body feels sore, painful, and stiff, as if I've been beaten all over. It's not just one spot; various muscles and joints throughout my body take turns screaming in pain. Yet, X-rays, MRIs, and blood tests reveal no underlying cause.
“The hardest part is the suspicion that I'm faking it. I'm genuinely in pain, but the tests show everything is normal. Even after sleeping, I don't feel refreshed at all, and my body doesn't feel like my own.”
What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is not just a simple muscle ache. It's a lonely and invisible war, where one must fight against generalized pain of unknown origin, extreme fatigue, sleep disorders, and a lack of understanding from others.
The Brain's 'Pain Volume' Becomes Overly Sensitive
The pain of fibromyalgia is not a problem with the muscles or joints themselves. It is a malfunction of our brain and nervous system, which control pain. Our brain has a 'volume dial' that regulates pain signals.
Normally, the brain ignores minor pain signals or perceives them at a lower volume. However, in fibromyalgia, this 'volume dial' malfunctions, amplifying even the smallest pain signals to 'maximum volume'. This is referred to as 'central sensitization'.
When the 'Waterways' Throughout the Body Are Blocked
In Korean medicine, our body is viewed as a land crisscrossed by countless 'waterways (경락, meridians)' through which 'qi (氣)' and 'blood (血)' flow. Fibromyalgia is seen as a state where these waterways are blocked in various places by 'sticky waste products (담음, damp-phlegm)' and 'stagnant blood clots (어혈, blood stasis)', leading to stagnation of flow and inadequate nutrient supply.
When the waterways are blocked, the 'land' (muscles) throughout the body becomes starved, resulting in aching pain. It's like a rice paddy where water doesn't flow properly, causing parts of it to rot and sicken. These waste products and blood stasis accumulate more easily due to a congenital weak constitution, excessive stress, and a decline in vital energy after childbirth or major surgery.
3 Ways for a Healthy Journey with Pain
Rather than fighting to eliminate pain, wise insight is needed to manage it and live alongside it.
Method 1: Gentle Movement
If you avoid movement due to fear of pain, muscles will become stiffer and weaker. It's important to maintain bodily function by consistently engaging in low-impact exercises such as swimming, aqua aerobics, or light walks, starting with very small amounts.
Method 2: Improving Sleep Quality (Sleep Hygiene)
Pain disrupts sleep, and insufficient sleep worsens pain. You should focus on improving sleep quality by going to bed at the same time every day, keeping your bedroom dark and quiet, and avoiding smartphones before bed.
Method 3: Energy Management (Energy Pacing)
Even on days when you feel good, you must not overexert yourself. The 'pacing' strategy, which involves understanding your energy levels and planning activities within those limits, is the most crucial technique to prevent a sudden worsening of pain.
Before 'Pain' Dominates Your Entire Life
Unexplained pain and fatigue trap our lives in an invisible prison. The fear of 'What if it hurts?' begins to hinder new attempts and social activities.
Neglecting this condition leads down a path into a deep swamp of despair: 'pain - reduced activity - worsened pain', where the fear of pain decreases muscle use, which in turn leads to a decline in physical strength and aggravated pain.
Your world narrows down to your bed and sofa. But now, understanding that this is a malfunction of the nervous system and actively seeking your own ways to manage pain is a courageous choice that goes beyond merely reducing pain; it is about breaking free from the dominance of pain and reclaiming the autonomy of the life you desire.
