Is it okay to take diet supplements or nutritional vitamins along with my herbal medicine? I'm worried there might be side effects if I take them together.
In short, it is generally fine, but it is essential that you inform me beforehand. Depending on the ingredients, some supplements may hinder the absorption of the herbal medicine or, conversely, overstimulate your system. I understand your concern, as I have personally experienced nausea from taking too many supplements. If you provide a list of your current products, I will adjust your prescription to remove overlapping ingredients and fill in only what is missing.
It is common for patients to take both supplements and herbal medicine in hopes of maximizing results. However, from a medical perspective, prioritizing your body's current state over simply combining products is crucial.
1. Metabolic State: Those with Spleen Deficiency (脾虛, bi-heo)—a state of weakened digestive and transformative function—may experience worsened gastrointestinal distress when taking high-dose supplements.
2. Accumulation of Waste: If your body has significant Phlegm-Fluid (痰飮, dam-eum)—the accumulation of unnecessary fluids and metabolic waste—adding strong stimulants can overwhelm your system, leading to increased swelling or severe fatigue.
3. Circulation Check: In cases of Blood Stasis (瘀血, eo-hyeol), where blood flow is obstructed, the active ingredients of supplements may not be delivered efficiently, often resulting in a lack of expected efficacy.
4. Interaction Management: Certain supplement ingredients can block the medicinal effects of herbal formulas or, in some cases, create an excessive synergy that causes discomfort, such as heart palpitations.
Ultimately, the answer lies in 'individualized customization.' Based on clinical experience, removing what is unnecessary and keeping only what suits your body is far more efficient than simply adding more. I recommend we review the specific ingredients of your current supplements during your visit to establish a safer and more comfortable treatment plan.
