Why is it possible to use a Korean Medicine clinic located in Seoul's Guro or Gangseo districts through non-face-to-face consultations?
Non-face-to-face consultations became possible due to the government’s temporary telehealth allowance after COVID-19, combined with stable video platforms. TKM compensates for the lack of pulse diagnosis (脈診) by using detailed questioning (問診), tongue photos (舌診), and surveys to identify patterns such as Spleen Deficiency (脾虛) or Blood Stasis (瘀血). This allows patients who are far or have tight schedules to start consultations without needing to visit in person.
I initially doubted whether remote Korean Medicine consultations could work, but experience has shown clear reasons. Western medicine sees telemedicine as digitizing information transfer—studies indicate that sharing voice, facial expressions, and past test results via video can achieve about 80% diagnostic accuracy using a standardized questionnaire, a method long used in psychiatry and dermatology. In TKM, the four examinations (望聞問切) lose pulse palpation (切脈) and abdominal palpation (腹診), which is a limitation. However, with clinical experience, tongue photos (舌診) and detailed questioning can accurately identify patterns like Spleen Deficiency (脾虛) with Phlegm-Dampness (濕痰) or Blood Stasis (瘀血). For example, indigestion with clear teeth marks (齒痕) on the tongue and a sticky coating points to Spleen Deficiency with Phlegm-Fluid (痰飮). This way, remote pattern identification (辨證) is possible, and decoctions or powders (散劑) are adjusted accordingly. The advantage is saving commute time—especially for residents of outer Seoul like Guro or Gangseo—and overcoming the perception that herbal medicine is expensive or inconvenient. Honestly, the downside is missing subtle changes in Blood Deficiency (血虛) or Kidney Deficiency (腎虛) without pulse palpation, so I recommend in-person visits every 2–3 months for a proper pulse exam. Still, for initial consultations and regular follow-ups, non-face-to-face is effective and serves as a first step to break prejudices.
