How should I interpret diarrhea and abdominal pain that continue for several more days after gastroenteritis?

After gastroenteritis, the intestinal lining may remain sensitive, so diarrhea and abdominal pain can persist for a few more days. However, if warning signs such as high fever, bloody stools, or dehydration appear, seeking prompt medical evaluation should come first.
Even after gastroenteritis has passed, the intestines may not return to their usual rhythm right away. In Korean medicine, this period is viewed as a state in which spleen-stomach function is weakened and the intestines are tense from cold. First, replenish fluids in small amounts frequently, and avoid greasy foods and late-night meals for a few days, gradually easing back into a soft diet such as porridge. If symptoms recur or returning to daily activities is difficult, individual differences can be significant, so it is advisable to consult a specialist to determine the cause.
