Will herbal diet medicine cause insomnia or other side effects? I've heard that lack of sleep is bad for weight loss.
This is a common concern. Rather than simply suppressing appetite, the core of Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) diet therapy is to balance the body, improve sleep quality, and optimize metabolism. Since sleep deprivation disrupts appetite-regulating hormones, making weight loss significantly harder, our goal is to ensure a healthy sleep-wake cycle.
When you don't get enough sleep, several physiological changes occur that hinder weight loss. Based on clinical experience, this happens through four primary pathways:
1. Disruption of Appetite Hormones: Sleep deprivation increases ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and decreases leptin (the satiety hormone), making it nearly impossible to control cravings through willpower alone.
2. Increase in Cortisol: Lack of sleep puts the body in a state of emergency, triggering the release of cortisol. This stress hormone promotes muscle breakdown and encourages fat accumulation, particularly in the abdominal area.
3. Spleen Deficiency (Bi-heo, 脾虛): From a TKM perspective, inadequate sleep can lead to Spleen Deficiency. When the function of the Spleen—responsible for digestion and nutrient transformation—is weakened, energy metabolism becomes inefficient, leading to fatigue and 'false hunger' that triggers binge eating.
4. Accumulation of Phlegm-Fluid (Dam-eum, 痰飮) and Blood Stasis (Eo-hyeol, 瘀血): Sleep is the body's primary time for detoxification. Insufficient rest leads to the buildup of Dam-eum (metabolic waste) and Eo-hyeol (stagnant blood), which causes edema (swelling) and significantly slows down the basal metabolic rate.
Forcing a restrictive diet while sleep-deprived causes the body to resist weight loss more aggressively. Therefore, I focus on analyzing each patient's sleep patterns and prescribing formulas that relieve tension and balance the nervous system, creating an environment where you can 'sleep well and lose weight effectively.' Let's work together to restore your restful nights first.
