Things to Consider When Treating Headaches

What is Rhinitis?
Rhinitis is an inflammatory disease of the nasal lining, characterized by symptoms such as a runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, and itching. While its symptoms are similar to those of a common cold, making them easy to confuse, a cold is caused by a virus, whereas rhinitis is characterized by an overreaction of the nasal mucous membrane to specific substances. Rhinitis can be broadly divided into infectious rhinitis and non-infectious rhinitis.
Infectious Rhinitis
This type of rhinitis results from infection by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms. It primarily includes acute rhinitis and chronic rhinitis; what we commonly refer to as a common cold also falls under acute infectious rhinitis.
Non-infectious Rhinitis
This rhinitis is caused by external environmental factors, not infection. It primarily includes allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, drug-induced rhinitis, and atrophic rhinitis.
What is Allergic Rhinitis?
Allergic rhinitis is the most commonly occurring disease among non-infectious rhinitis types. It is a condition where inflammation develops due to an overreaction of the nasal mucous membrane upon exposure to specific allergens. Key symptoms include nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and itching around the eyes or nose. These may also be accompanied by symptoms such as headaches, watery eyes, nosebleeds, and a reduced sense of smell. It particularly worsens during transitional seasons, and in severe cases, symptoms such as sleep disturbance, decreased concentration, and chronic fatigue may appear, leading to a diminished quality of life. Furthermore, it can be accompanied by other allergic conditions such as atopic dermatitis or asthma. If left untreated, severe nasal congestion can progress to sinusitis or otitis media.

안녕하세요, 백록담한의원 대표원장 최연승입니다.

While operating my Korean medicine clinic, I meet many patients suffering from illnesses.

They often ask me countless questions, such as what the cause of their illness is, how they can get better, and what their future treatment plans are.

Of course, it is the role of a Korean medicine clinic to treat illnesses through consultations and to alleviate patients' concerns.

However, in the process of communicating with patients, I realized that the barrier to medical knowledge is too high.

While receiving treatment is important, accurately understanding one's own illness is equally crucial.

Only by accurately understanding their illness can they make the wise decisions necessary to maintain their own health.

Therefore, I set the goal of 'lowering the barrier to medical knowledge'.

The Baekrokdam Korean Medicine Clinic blog is one of my efforts to achieve this goal.

Here, Korean medical information and various health stories will be presented in an easy and enjoyable way.

I hope that all who read this will easily access medical knowledge and that it helps them maintain their own health.

Thank you.

Sincerely, Choi Yeon-seung

Things GERD Patients Are Curious About

Hello, this is Choi Yeon-seung, the head director of Baekrokdam Korean Medicine Clinic. Today, I'd like to talk about preventing emerging infectious diseases.

The COVID-19 pandemic, which began last year, introduced us to new ways of life we had never experienced before. Adhering to daily preventive measures such as social distancing, mask-wearing, and handwashing became essential, and international travel became unimaginable. However, even if the pandemic ends, the threat of emerging infectious diseases will not disappear. On the contrary, the likelihood of new infectious diseases emerging is increasing due to factors like climate change and globalization.

So, what should we do to protect ourselves from emerging infectious diseases? I'd like to introduce a few methods.

1. Maintain Strict Personal Hygiene
This is the most basic yet most important method. Make it a habit to wash your hands with soap for at least 30 seconds, observe cough etiquette (cover your cough with your sleeve), and wear a mask (when necessary).

2. Strengthen Your Immunity
A healthy body enhances resistance to viruses and bacteria. Regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and a balanced diet are essential for strengthening immunity. Korean medicine, in particular, offers various methods to boost immunity by balancing the 'five viscera and six bowels' (Ojang Yukbu) and promoting smooth circulation of 'Qi and blood' (Gi-hyeol).

3. Get Vaccinated
You should get all available vaccines, such as the flu shot. Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect our bodies from infectious diseases.

4. Rest When You're Sick
If you experience any unusual symptoms, you should immediately rest and visit a hospital for medical attention. Continuing activities while sick not only jeopardizes your own health but also increases the risk of spreading infectious diseases to those around you.

5. Pay Attention to Information and Respond Appropriately
Stay informed with accurate information provided by the government and healthcare institutions, and be careful not to be misled by false information or fake news. Furthermore, in the event of an infectious disease outbreak, it is crucial to follow expert instructions and respond correctly.

Emerging infectious diseases can pose a continuous threat to our society. However, through individual efforts and collective societal cooperation, we can overcome them. Baekrokdam Korean Medicine Clinic supports your healthy life and is committed to providing information for preventing emerging infectious diseases and offering Korean medicine treatments. Thank you.
