After dieting, I always experience the yo-yo effect. Is there a way to prevent it?
The key to preventing the yo-yo effect is knowing your constitution. 1) Identify your constitution (e.g., Spleen Qi Deficiency, Phlegm-Fluid). 2) Rather than extreme dietary restriction, eat to tonify the Spleen. 3) Combine aerobic and strength exercises. 4) Don’t neglect sleep and stress management. 5) Herbal medicine or acupuncture can gradually improve your constitution itself.
I understand how frustrating the yo-yo effect can be—I’ve been through it myself before becoming a Korean medicine doctor. The body tends to respond to dieting then revert to its original state. In Traditional Korean Medicine, this is viewed through the concept of constitution (體質).
1) Understanding constitution: Digestive ability, metabolic rate, and stress response vary by constitution. For example, a Spleen Qi Deficiency (脾虛) constitution has weak Spleen function, impairing nutrient absorption. If such a person follows a very low-calorie diet, muscle loss and metabolic decline occur, making rebound easy. Conversely, a Phlegm-Fluid (痰飮) constitution retains water and waste, leading to puffiness. Constitutional diagnosis is possible through pulse, tongue, and inquiry examinations by a Korean medicine doctor.
2) Dietary adjustment: Drastic calorie reduction is contraindicated. Focus on foods that nourish the Spleen (e.g., yam, lotus root, pumpkin, legumes), and reduce cold drinks and greasy foods. Prioritize 'eating for easy digestion' over 'eating less at all costs'.
3) Exercise: Aerobic exercise alone improves Qi and Blood (氣血) circulation but does not maintain muscle strength. Combine strength training to sustain basal metabolism. However, suddenly doing high-intensity exercise can worsen Spleen Qi Deficiency, so adjust according to your physical capacity.
4) Sleep and stress: Poor sleep causes Liver Qi (肝氣) stagnation and impairs Spleen function. Accumulated stress disrupts appetite-regulating hormones, potentially leading to binge eating. Aim for about 7 hours of quality sleep per night; relieve stress with light walks or breathing techniques.
5) Korean medicine management: Constitutional improvement through herbal medicine (e.g., Buzhong Yiqi Tang for Spleen Deficiency patterns) or acupuncture/moxibustion can help prevent rebound. If Blood Stasis (瘀血) or Phlegm-Fluid is the cause, specific formulas exist. Since approaches vary by individual, I recommend visiting a clinic for personalized consultation.
Korean medicine dieting aims not at short-term weight loss but at transforming the constitution to create a rebound-free body shape. Please feel free to ask any further questions.
