How exactly does the 'detox diet' in Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) work?

Rather than simple fasting, it is a process of removing 'metabolic waste' from the body. For those who experience chronic swelling, heaviness, or extreme post-meal drowsiness, weight loss is often hindered by poor excretion of metabolic by-products. The core principle is to reopen the body's circulation pathways and normalize metabolic functions, creating an internal environment where weight loss can occur naturally and sustainably, tailored to each individual's constitution.
Many believe that eating less and exercising more is the only answer, but in clinical practice, some patients struggle to lose weight even under strict calorie restriction. In Traditional Korean Medicine, this is viewed through the lens of 'waste products' or metabolic debris. Specifically, we look at 'Eohyeol' (瘀血, blood stasis)—stagnant blood or debris in the vessels—and 'Dameum' (痰飮, phlegm-fluid)—waste caused by poor fluid circulation. When these accumulate, the metabolic rate drops significantly. It is like a sink with a clogged drain; no matter how high-quality the 'medicine' or diet is, the effects remain sluggish if the drainage system is blocked. Furthermore, patients with 'Bi-heo' (脾虛, Spleen deficiency/weak digestive function) have a diminished capacity to detoxify. This creates a vicious cycle: low energy leads to a heavy body, which in turn reduces physical activity. Therefore, we prioritize a detoxification process to clear these 'blocked pathways' first. Instead of forcibly suppressing appetite, the goal is to restore the body's innate power to process waste, which is the most effective way to prevent the 'yo-yo effect' (weight regain). Since the direction and intensity of detoxification must be adjusted based on an individual's unique constitution (Sasang typology) and current health status, a professional diagnostic consultation is essential.
