I'm a parent in my 40s concerned about my child's obesity. Calculating childhood obesity seems complicated... How is it different from a typical adult diet, and what are the advantages of Korean Medicine (TKM) treatment?

Unlike adult dieting, which focuses on reducing numbers and removing waste, childhood weight management must prioritize growth while addressing 'Sikjeok' (Food Stagnation). Simply reducing food intake can be counterproductive for a growing child. In Traditional Korean Medicine, we focus on strengthening 'Biheo' (Spleen Deficiency) to improve metabolic efficiency fundamentally, ensuring the child has the energy to grow taller while naturally regulating their weight.

Applying adult dieting methods to children by drastically cutting food intake is dangerous as it can stunt growth during a critical developmental phase. In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), childhood obesity is not viewed simply as a result of overeating, but as a functional imbalance. We first examine if the child has 'Biheo' (Spleen Qi Deficiency). When the digestive system is weak, nutrients are not properly converted into energy and instead accumulate as metabolic waste known as 'Dameum' (Phlegm-Fluid). Additionally, children often suffer from 'Sikjeok' (Food Stagnation), where undigested food creates internal heat that triggers an abnormally high appetite. TKM treatment is designed to 'weed out' these wastes while reinforcing the child's vital energy to support growth. The approach differs significantly from adult diets: while adults focus on calorie restriction and removing 'Eohyeol' (Blood Stasis), child management focuses on growth plate stimulation and metabolic improvement. The core philosophy is to help the child 'grow into' their weight—by maintaining weight or allowing it to increase very slowly while the child grows taller, the obesity index naturally decreases. This method ensures long-term health and prevents side effects like nutritional imbalances or growth inhibition.
