What is the difference between trending diet plans, like the burger-based diets, and Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) weight loss? Which one would be better for me?
Dietary restriction is an efficient way to reduce immediate caloric intake. However, while dieting focuses on 'inputting less,' TKM weight loss focuses on improving your body's metabolic capacity to 'burn better.' Rather than choosing one over the other, the key is selecting the right tool that aligns with your current physiological state.
As a practitioner who also loves food, I don't believe in unconditionally banning tasty foods like burgers. The problem is that strict dietary restriction often triggers a 'state of emergency' in the body, causing the basal metabolic rate to plummet.
In TKM, weight gain is not viewed simply as a lack of willpower. If your body has accumulated 'Dam-eum' (phlegm-fluid retention)—waste products that stagnate energy—or 'Eo-hyeol' (blood stasis), you may find it difficult to lose weight even with low caloric intake. Furthermore, those with 'Bi-heo' (Spleen Deficiency/weak digestive function) may experience extreme fatigue and dizziness when restricting food.
Here is a comparison of the two approaches:
| Category | General Dietary Control (Low Calorie) | TKM Weight Loss (Metabolism Up) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Core Principle | Caloric restriction | Activating metabolism & constitutional improvement |
| Advantages | Immediate control over calories | Reduced hunger & maintenance of energy levels |
| Limitations | Low sustainability & high risk of yo-yo effect | Requires personalized herbal prescription |
| Approach | Focuses on 'what not to eat' | Focuses on 'how to burn efficiently' |
| Goal | Reducing the number on the scale | Healthy body composition & metabolic recovery |
While a balanced diet is fundamental, if your body's 'engine' (metabolic power) is off, you must restart the engine first. Instead of struggling with restrictive diets, the fastest and healthiest path is to accurately assess your current physical condition and find a personalized pace for weight loss.
