I've noticed many people are getting herbal weight loss prescriptions through remote consultations lately. What is the difference between that and visiting a Korean medicine clinic in person for a consultation?

While remote consultations offer significant convenience for busy individuals, in-person visits provide the precision necessary for a truly personalized prescription. Physical examinations, such as pulse taking and tongue observation, are vital for identifying subtle health nuances that phone calls might miss. To accurately assess your unique constitution and ensure the safest results, I generally recommend an in-person consultation.

In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), we rely on the 'Four Examinations' (Sajin)—observation, listening/smelling, inquiry, and palpation—to accurately diagnose a patient's state. While remote consultations are efficient, they often lack the ability to check for subtle signs like skin complexion or specific types of edema (swelling). Identifying whether your weight gain is due to 'Dam-eum' (phlegm-fluid/accumulated metabolic waste) or 'Bi-heo' (Spleen Qi Deficiency) often requires these direct observations, and these distinctions are the 'deciding factor' in tailoring your herbal formula. | Category | Remote Consultation | In-person Consultation (Recommended) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Diagnosis** | Primarily via phone interview | Comprehensive 'Four Examinations' | | **Constitution** | Based on self-reported questionnaires | Verified via pulse and tongue diagnosis | | **Testing** | Uses self-measured data | Professional InBody (BIA) analysis | | **Prescription** | General symptom management | Customized for Spleen Deficiency or Blood Stasis | | **Management** | Irregular phone follow-ups | Scheduled visits for lifestyle coaching | If your schedule is extremely restrictive, starting with a remote consultation is better than doing nothing. However, if you have struggled with side effects or the yo-yo effect in the past, I strongly recommend an initial face-to-face visit. This allows me to become a true partner in your weight loss journey by fully understanding your body’s unique needs.
