I am severely obese and want to start a Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) diet. Which method do you recommend most?

The recommended approach varies based on your individual constitution and current health status. Generally, we suggest a combination of herbal medicine to control appetite and acupuncture to boost metabolism. The most important factor is a gradual, step-by-step approach that your body can safely handle rather than pursuing overly aggressive methods.

Having studied this field and experienced trial and error myself, I understand the urge to push hard for immediate results. However, for those struggling with severe obesity, the 'direction' of the treatment is far more critical than the 'intensity.' The primary advantage of TKM is its personalized nature. We determine whether you are in a state of Spleen Deficiency (脾虛), characterized by low energy, or if there is an accumulation of Phlegm-Fluid (痰飮) or Blood Stasis (瘀血) causing metabolic waste. By addressing these specific patterns, we improve metabolic efficiency rather than simply starving the body. Furthermore, we can manage and mitigate common side effects found in Western weight-loss medications, such as insomnia or heart palpitations. There are, of course, some drawbacks. You may need time to adjust to the unique scent and taste of herbal decoctions, and because these prescriptions are tailored, there may be a waiting period. Additionally, while herbal medicine supports the process, it cannot replace the fundamental requirement of dietary control, which can still feel psychologically burdensome. Ultimately, the answer is 'it depends on the individual.' For some, suppressing appetite is the immediate priority; for others, reducing edema (swelling) must come first. Identifying exactly where your body's circulation is blocked is the key to a healthy weight loss journey without the yo-yo effect. Let's work together to find the most comfortable and sustainable method for you.
