I’m struggling to decide between herbal medicine and Western medicine for weight loss. Which one would you recommend?

Both options have distinct advantages and disadvantages, so the first step is to assess your current physical condition. While Western medicine offers rapid appetite suppression, it can cause side effects like tremors or insomnia. TKM herbal medicine focuses on constitutional improvement, which may feel slower but promotes long-term health. The key is choosing a method that your body can sustainably handle.

In the past, I also struggled with extreme fasting and harsh medications, experiencing firsthand the dizziness and exhaustion they can cause. This taught me the vital importance of 'sustainable weight loss.' Western medicine works by stimulating the central nervous system to effectively suppress appetite, which is great for building early momentum. However, one must be careful of the 'rebound' hunger or lethargy that can occur once the medication is stopped. Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) focuses on harmonizing the circulation of Qi and Blood and expelling metabolic wastes like Phlegm-fluid (Damyum) and Blood Stasis (Eohyeol). It is especially effective for those with Spleen Deficiency (Biheo)—where a weak digestive system leads to weight gain—as it boosts vitality while managing weight. While the herbal aroma might be new and the appetite suppression less instant than Western drugs, it treats the root cause. Ultimately, the 'best' choice depends on your body’s needs: if you have low muscle mass and poor digestion, TKM is often more suitable; if immediate appetite control for high-degree obesity is the priority, Western medicine may be considered. I recommend a consultation to examine the state of your internal organs (Jang-bu) and find the customized plan that fits you best.
