I’m on a diet, but I’m really craving Subway cookies. As a doctor of Korean medicine, can you recommend the best way to eat them?

While they are a great mood booster, they are a 'double-edged sword' when losing weight because their high sugar and fat content rapidly spikes blood sugar. If you must indulge, avoid eating them immediately after a meal; instead, have just half a cookie during the day when your activity levels are high. You need the wisdom to govern your intake by monitoring your body's metabolic state.

I personally love those chewy cookies, so I understand the struggle. I don't believe in telling patients to simply 'endure it,' as total restriction often leads to binging. In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), the sweet flavor is known to relieve tension and temporarily cool 'Liver Fire' (肝火) triggered by stress. Sometimes, a small reward satisfies 'psychological hunger' and provides the mental drive to continue a diet. However, cookies made of refined flour and sugar are prone to creating 'Phlegm-fluid' (痰飮) in the body. When this sticky waste accumulates, it hinders circulation and eventually shifts your metabolism into a state where it is difficult to lose weight. If you have a 'Spleen Deficiency' (脾虛) constitution with a weak digestive system, you will likely experience immediate swelling (edema) from high-sugar foods. Therefore, we should eat strategically. Try to limit yourself to half a cookie during the day when you are most active. Since eating a cookie on an empty stomach causes blood sugar to fluctuate wildly—increasing the risk of overeating at your next meal—it is actually better to enjoy it as a dessert after a balanced meal. The key is the wisdom to observe whether your metabolic state is ready to handle the sugar.
