I've started a diet focusing mainly on tuna. What kind of meal plan would you recommend from a TKM perspective?
While tuna is an excellent source of protein, I do not recommend a single-food diet. Although it helps preserve muscle mass, relying on it exclusively can strain your digestive system and lead to nutritional imbalances. The key is finding a 'balance' that aligns with your body's specific digestive capacity.
I have also had experiences in the past where I over-enthusiastically restricted my diet to only chicken breast or fish, only to find myself completely drained of energy and feeling dizzy. I learned the hard way that such extremes are unsustainable.
The advantages of a tuna-centric diet are clear: being high-protein and low-fat, it provides lasting satiety and helps minimize muscle loss, making it a convenient option for busy professionals.
However, the drawbacks are significant. A severe lack of healthy fats and dietary fiber often leads to constipation. More importantly, from a TKM perspective, this can lead to 'Bi-heo' (脾虛), or Spleen Deficiency. When Spleen function weakens, the body cannot properly absorb nutrients, making you feel fatigued more easily.
Furthermore, TKM emphasizes the need to manage 'Dam-eum' (痰飮, phlegm-fluid retention) and 'Eo-hyeol' (瘀血, blood stasis), which are metabolic waste products. Sticking to a single food group can hinder the smooth discharge of these metabolites, leaving your body feeling heavy and sluggish.
Ultimately, the right approach depends on the individual. Those with naturally strong digestion may tolerate a tuna-heavy diet well, but those prone to bloating or fatigue must incorporate vegetables and whole grains. Finding a customized diet that fits your specific constitution and current physical state is the core of a healthy, sustainable weight loss journey without the yo-yo effect.
