Q. I've heard that limiting eating windows is good for weight loss. Should I eat twice a day or stick to three full meals?

A.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer, as digestive and metabolic capacities vary by individual. Rather than blindly skipping meals, it is crucial to assess your body's current state. Use this checklist: If you feel energetic and focused without breakfast, two meals may work. If you experience tremors or irritability when meals are delayed, three meals are recommended. If you often feel bloated or have poor digestion, three small meals are best.

📝 Detailed Answer

In my younger years, I also experimented with extreme fasting and restricting meal times, but it only led to dizzying headaches and the dreaded yo-yo effect. Simply reducing the frequency of meals is not always the solution. In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), we examine this through the lens of Spleen Deficiency (Bi-heo, 脾虛). If you restrict meals excessively while your Spleen function is weak, your body enters a 'survival mode,' increasing its tendency to store energy. This can paradoxically transform your body into a constitution that gains weight easily even with minimal intake. Furthermore, irregular eating patterns can easily lead to the accumulation of Phlegm-Fluid (Dam-eum, 痰飮), which is a state of stagnant metabolic waste. When the circulation of Qi and Blood is obstructed, it can lead to Blood Stasis (Eo-hyeol, 瘀血), lowering overall metabolic efficiency and hindering weight loss. The key is not 'how many times' you eat, but whether you are providing a consistent supply of nutrients that your digestive organs can handle. For those with weak digestion, dividing food into three small portions can help awaken the metabolism. Conversely, those with robust gastrointestinal functions may find intermittent fasting more effective. I believe the fastest path to success is creating a meal plan based on your current metabolic state. If you visit the clinic, we can evaluate your digestive health and constitution to determine the most comfortable and effective eating routine for you.
