Bell's Palsy, My face feels strange
Hello, I am Choi Yeon-seung, the Chief Director of Baengnokdam Korean Medicine Clinic. I'm greeting you with a blog post after a long time. I've been frantically busy with the clinic's expansion and relocation, but now I've finally gathered my thoughts and am able to post. Today, I'd like to talk about cystitis, a condition that women are almost certain to experience at least once in their lifetime. What is commonly referred to as 'urinary irritation' is also a type of cystitis. It is said that women have a greater than 50% chance of developing cystitis over their lifetime because their urethra is shorter than men's, and the anus and vagina are in close proximity, making them more susceptible to bacterial infections. In cases of simple cystitis, the inflammation is confined solely to the bladder, and symptoms often improve within a few days after antibiotic treatment. However, cystitis frequently recurs or becomes chronic, requiring special management. Today, we will delve into the causes and treatments for recurrent or chronic cystitis.

Causes of Recurrent and Chronic Cystitis
Typically, the cause of cystitis is bacterial infection. It is known that E. coli infection is the cause in over 80% of cystitis patients. However, in cases of recurrent or chronic cystitis, rather than simple cystitis, various complex causes beyond bacterial infection contribute to the symptoms. The bladder's immunity may be compromised, making it susceptible to bacterial infection, or the bladder's function itself may be impaired, leading to incomplete urination and often leaving residual urine in the bladder. Furthermore, it is common to observe cystitis recurring or becoming chronic due to stress, overwork, or menopausal hormonal imbalances. From a traditional Korean medicine perspective, these causes are closely related to the functional decline of the Kidneys and Spleen, which govern bladder function. If Kidney function declines, the bladder's water metabolism function is impaired, leading to residual urine accumulation, and weakened immunity makes one susceptible to bacterial infection. If Spleen function declines, the circulation of *qi* and blood in the body becomes sluggish, preventing proper contraction and relaxation of bladder muscles, and also reducing bladder immunity, thus becoming a cause of recurrent or chronic cystitis.

Treatment of Recurrent and Chronic Cystitis
In Western medicine, cystitis caused by bacterial infection can be treated relatively easily with antibiotic prescriptions. However, for recurrent or chronic cystitis, treatment with antibiotics alone is often difficult due to issues such as antibiotic resistance or side effects. In such cases, a fundamental treatment is needed that enhances immunity and improves bladder function, thereby creating a healthier bladder environment and preventing recurrence. At Baengnokdam Korean Medicine Clinic, for the fundamental treatment of recurrent and chronic cystitis,
our treatment focuses on enhancing immunity and improving *qi* and blood circulation through the improvement of Kidney and Spleen function. For any woman who has experienced cystitis even once, we highly recommend visiting Baengnokdam Korean Medicine Clinic to experience fundamental treatment that prevents recurrence.

Occipital Neuralgia: If Pain Relievers and Nerve Blocks Don't Work
Hello, this is Baengnokdam Korean Medicine Clinic. Today, we will explore methods for relieving severe menstrual cramps.
Menstrual cramps are a common symptom experienced by approximately 50% of women, and they can be accompanied by various symptoms such as lower abdominal pain, lower back pain, headaches, and nausea.
The causes of menstrual cramps can be broadly divided into two types: Primary Dysmenorrhea
This refers to menstrual pain that occurs without any specific underlying disease in the uterus or pelvis. It is caused by the excessive secretion of a substance called prostaglandin, which contracts the uterine muscles and thereby induces pain.
Secondary Dysmenorrhea
This is menstrual pain caused by specific underlying conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, or uterine fibroids. Compared to primary dysmenorrhea, the pain tends to be more severe and last longer.
Menstrual Cramp Relief Methods
Since menstrual cramps are often severe enough to disrupt daily life, it's important to find appropriate relief methods.
1. Warm Compress
Applying a warm water bottle or hot pack to the lower abdomen promotes blood circulation and relaxes muscles, which helps alleviate pain.
2. Light Exercise
Light exercises such as yoga or stretching help improve blood circulation and promote endorphin secretion, thereby reducing pain. However, intense exercise can worsen the pain, so it's best to avoid it.
3. Balanced Diet
Consuming foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., fatty fish, nuts) and Vitamins B1, B6, and E can help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. Caffeine and alcohol can worsen the pain, so it's advisable to reduce their consumption.
4. Adequate Rest
During your period, it's important to get enough rest to avoid straining your body. Since stress can be a factor that worsens menstrual cramps, it's also good to manage stress through meditation or deep breathing exercises.
5. Traditional Korean Medicine Treatment
If menstrual cramps are severe or become chronic, you may consider Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) treatment. Treatments such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine can improve blood circulation in the uterus and pelvis and remove stagnant blood, thereby helping to fundamentally treat menstrual cramps.

Menstrual cramps are a common symptom, but their causes and symptoms can vary. It's important to manage symptoms through the relief methods introduced above, and seek professional help if necessary.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Baengnokdam Korean Medicine Clinic anytime!
Thank you.
