I've hit a weight loss plateau where my weight just isn't changing anymore. How do people usually overcome this?
It's common to feel lost during a plateau, often wondering if something is wrong. Many patients try stricter diets or more exercise, but this often exhausts the body and hinders further progress. A plateau is often a natural defense mechanism where the body attempts to maintain its new weight. Rather than forcing progress, the key is to assess your current metabolic state and adjust your strategy accordingly.
In my experience, many patients try to break a plateau through 'extreme calorie restriction.' However, the body perceives this as an emergency and holds onto energy even more tightly. Forcing the body through starvation is rarely the answer.
From the perspective of Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), a plateau is seen as a state of stagnation in the circulation of Qi and Blood, specifically where Dam-eum (phlegm-fluid retention) or Eo-hyeol (blood stasis) has accumulated, reducing metabolic efficiency. Dam-eum refers to the viscous accumulation of waste products in the body, while Eo-hyeol is like 'sludge' caused by poor blood circulation. When combined with Pi-heo (Spleen deficiency)—a weakness in the digestive and absorptive organs—the body fails to utilize nutrients effectively and accumulates waste, causing weight loss to stall.
The core of overcoming a plateau is 'reigniting the metabolic switch.' This is not about eating less, but about strengthening the Spleen's function and clearing the accumulated Dam-eum and Eo-hyeol to create an environment where the body can burn energy again. Since the cause of a plateau varies by individual, a one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective. The most efficient method is to accurately diagnose the signals your body is sending and receive a customized prescription based on those findings.
