Is the BMI calculator (BMI) really an accurate way to check my body's status? I'm curious why this specific number matters so much when I'm trying to lose weight.
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a fundamental indicator used to gauge obesity based on height and weight. In Western medicine, it serves as an initial step to predict risks for metabolic conditions like cardiovascular disease or diabetes. From a Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) perspective, a high BMI signals that 'Dameum' (Phlegm-fluid) or 'Eohyeol' (Blood Stasis) has begun to accumulate, leading to sluggish blood flow. Rather than just a simple number, it should be viewed as a warning light indicating that your metabolic system is overloaded.
I understand the anxiety of checking a BMI calculator; many people prefer to avoid the reality of the numbers. However, when starting treatment, this value serves as a crucial navigation tool. In Western medicine, exceeding a certain BMI threshold is linked to insulin resistance and chronic inflammatory responses. While there may be discrepancies based on muscle mass, it is statistically clear that a higher BMI significantly increases the risk of adult-onset diseases. Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) explains this process through 'Biheo' (Spleen Deficiency). When the Spleen, which governs digestion and absorption, becomes weak, energy fails to circulate properly, leaving behind residues. We call these sticky waste products 'Dameum' (Phlegm-fluid). When this Phlegm-fluid stagnates in the blood vessels or tissues, it turns into 'Eohyeol' (Blood Stasis), which obstructs the overall circulation of Qi and Blood. The causality is straightforward: poor habits lead to Spleen Deficiency, which results in the accumulation of toxins like Phlegm-fluid and Blood Stasis, eventually causing the BMI to rise. Rather than being discouraged by the number itself, it is more important to examine where your metabolic circulation is blocked. Our clinical approach focuses on clearing this 'Dameum' and unblocking stagnant pathways first. Only after the body's internal toxins are emptied can it truly be ready for healthy and sustainable weight loss.
