Q. When I'm stressed, I keep binge eating. Is there a solution?

A.

Stress-induced binge eating can be really tough. If it's occasional, try redirecting your mouth—drink water or chew gum. If it's chronic with weight changes or heartburn, your body's balance is off. In Traditional Korean Medicine, this involves Liver Qi stagnation and Spleen deficiency. Rather than willpower, focus on restoring body harmony first.

📝 Detailed Answer

Stress-induced binge eating involves not only neurotransmitter imbalance but also, in TKM, disharmony between the Liver (gan) and Spleen (pi). When stress accumulates, Liver Qi becomes stagnant (gan gi ulche), turning into heat that rises to the Stomach, causing excessive appetite (wiyeol). Simultaneously, stress weakens Spleen function (biheo), impairing digestion and leading to phlegm-dampness accumulation (dameum/seup). This creates a vicious cycle of bingeing → indigestion → more stress. Two approaches: 1) Temporary bingeing: Focus on soothing Liver Qi and descending Stomach heat. Drink light teas like peppermint or chamomile, and eat easily digestible foods like congee. Practice a '10-second pause' when cravings hit—impulse signals weaken. 2) Chronic bingeing with weight gain, fatigue, or constipation: This indicates established Spleen deficiency and phlegm-dampness. Avoid harsh diets or fasting. Consider herbal formulas like Bojoongikgi-tang variations to strengthen Spleen, or Soshiho-tang modifications to relieve Liver stagnation. Ear acupuncture (ear acupressure) may help control binge urges. All treatments require professional consultation based on individual constitution. Remember, this is not a willpower issue. Listen to your body and care for both Liver and Spleen.
