Q. How does a diet treatment at a Korean Medicine clinic work?

A.

At your first visit, we assess your condition through consultation, pulse-taking, and tongue diagnosis. Treatment mainly targets two patterns: Spleen deficiency (Pi Xu) with poor digestion and bloating — using herbs to strengthen digestive function; or Phlegm-fluid retention (Tan Yin) with heaviness and edema — using herbs to regulate water metabolism. Follow-up visits occur every 1–2 weeks, with adjustments based on your progress.

📝 Detailed Answer

When you first come in, we ask about your diet history, lifestyle, eating patterns, bowel habits, bloating, fatigue, and swelling. Then we take your pulse and examine your tongue to determine if the root cause is Spleen deficiency (Pi Xu), Phlegm-fluid retention (Tan Yin), or Blood stasis (Yu Xue). For example, a pale tongue with a white coating and a soft pulse suggests Spleen deficiency; a purplish tongue with a slippery pulse suggests Phlegm or Blood stasis. Based on the diagnosis, we select a herbal formula. For Spleen deficiency, we use herbs that strengthen the Spleen and improve digestion and absorption. For Phlegm or Blood stasis, we focus on improving circulation and eliminating excess fluid or waste. Since everyone's body responds differently, the formula is refined every 1–2 weeks. I’ve learned through experience that adjusting gradually is key. Alongside herbal medicine, we may incorporate acupuncture, moxibustion, or cupping to enhance blood and Qi flow. The most important point is to avoid rushing weight loss — rapid reduction can disrupt metabolism and lead to rebound weight gain. We aim for steady, healthy changes, allowing your body time to adapt. If you've had side effects from Western diet medications, please mention them during consultation, as herbal medicine may help address those issues.
