How does the Denmark diet differ from a balanced weight-loss diet, and what should I watch out for?

The diet described as the ‘Denmark diet’ varies in composition and duration depending on its source, so its safety and effectiveness cannot be judged from the name alone. First check whether it provides adequate nutrition, can be maintained long term, and fits your current conditions and medicines.

The name ‘Denmark diet’ does not mean that the composition, duration, or calorie level is the same everywhere. If an online version is highly restrictive or relies heavily on particular foods, first check whether it meets nutritional needs and can be sustained compared with a generally balanced weight-loss diet. Do not assume that the name or short-term weight change proves effectiveness.

The U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) advises that a safe weight-management program should include a weight-loss eating plan suited to a person’s health status and preferences, appropriate physical activity, behavioral support, and a weight-maintenance plan. Be cautious of programs that promise excessive results such as ‘a large loss in a short time’ or claim weight loss without diet and exercise. When choosing a diet, consider whether it includes enough food groups such as vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and appropriate protein, and whether you could continue it after several weeks, rather than focusing on one protein or carbohydrate ratio.

If you have diabetes, kidney disease, or another condition, take medicines, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not make major restrictions on your own; coordinate the plan with your clinician. Terms such as ‘pi deficiency’ and ‘phlegm-fluid’ may be used in consultation as an interpretive framework for meal-related discomfort or fatigue in Korean medicine, but they do not establish the diet’s safety or effectiveness or replace a disease diagnosis.
