What exactly does a value of 0.82 mean in terms of abdominal obesity? I'm curious why it's harder to lose weight when this number is high.

A value of 0.82 refers to your Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR). Since abdominal obesity in women is typically diagnosed at 0.85 or higher, you are currently in the 'borderline' stage. An elevated WHR indicates increased visceral fat, which triggers insulin resistance and significantly lowers metabolic efficiency. This transforms your body into a state that struggles to burn fat, making weight loss efforts increasingly difficult.

A WHR of 0.82 is a critical point where visceral fat accumulation begins to cause insulin resistance—essentially, your body starts stubbornly storing sugar as fat instead of using it for fuel. In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), this condition is frequently associated with Spleen Qi Deficiency (脾虛). When the Spleen—the organ responsible for digestion and transport—weakens, the circulation of Qi and Blood stagnates, leading to the buildup of metabolic waste known as Phlegm-fluid (痰飮). When this Phlegm-fluid combines with Blood Stasis (瘀血) in the abdominal region, it creates a physical and energetic blockage. Because energy cannot flow smoothly throughout the body, it settles in the midsection, causing persistent belly fat. Many patients feel frustrated that they 'only gain weight in the stomach even when eating less,' which is a hallmark sign of this circulatory stagnation. Think of 0.82 as a warning light that your internal balance is disrupted. Rather than just cutting calories, the key to successful weight loss in this state is to resolve the Spleen Qi Deficiency and clear these internal blockages to restore your body's natural metabolic flow.
