How do these trendy diet drinks actually work to help with weight loss, and why are they said to be beneficial?

These drinks typically use alternative sweeteners instead of sugar to minimize insulin stimulation. This process follows a chain: reduced sugar intake leads to inhibited blood glucose spikes, which prevents excessive insulin secretion and ultimately suppresses fat accumulation. However, simply switching drinks won't fundamentally change your constitution; it is more important to address the underlying metabolic state that causes sugar cravings.

From a Western medical perspective, alternative sweeteners do not cause an immediate spike in blood glucose, thereby reducing the insulin response and preventing the body from quickly switching into 'fat-storage mode.' However, Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) takes a broader approach. Rather than focusing solely on what is consumed, we prioritize the body's 'processing capacity.' Specifically, when the function of the Spleen is weakened—a state known as Spleen Deficiency (脾虛, bi-heo)—the body fails to properly absorb and transport nutrients, leading to the accumulation of metabolic waste. This accumulated residue is referred to as Phlegm-Fluid (痰飮, dam-eum). When Phlegm-Fluid increases, metabolism stagnates, causing the body to feel heavy and bloated even with low caloric intake. If this is coupled with Blood Stasis (瘀血, eo-hyeol) due to poor circulation, you will likely hit a weight-loss plateau quickly because the body's overall circulatory system is not functioning, regardless of drinking low-calorie beverages. Ultimately, these drinks are merely supplementary. To achieve sustainable weight loss, you must first identify why your metabolic 'switch' has turned off and resolve the blockages in your Qi and blood flow.
