Doctor, I’m curious about the chicken breast diet everyone seems to be doing. How exactly does it work to help lose weight?

Focusing on chicken breast helps maintain basal metabolism and satiety by providing high protein while minimizing fat. This leverages 'Diet-Induced Thermogenesis,' where the body uses more energy to digest protein than fats or carbs. In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), this is understood as strengthening Spleen-Qi (脾氣) to aid waste elimination. However, relying solely on one food can lead to the stagnation of Qi and Blood (氣血), so a balanced intake is essential.

I recall trying a chicken-only diet myself and feeling quite dizzy after getting bored with it! (Laughs) A chicken breast diet isn't just about cutting calories; it’s a strategy that cleverly utilizes our metabolic system. From a Western medical perspective, the focus is on the high thermic effect of protein. Digestion itself requires energy, and protein burns significantly more calories during this process compared to carbohydrates or fats. It also stimulates satiety hormones, naturally reducing overall food intake. In TKM, chicken is warm in nature and beneficial for tonifying Spleen Deficiency (脾虛). It serves as an excellent energy source for those whose metabolism has slowed due to a lack of Vital Qi. However, excess in anything can become toxic. If someone with weak digestive power consumes excessive protein, the Spleen may struggle to process it, leading to the accumulation of Phlegm-fluid (痰飮). If you experience bloating or edema despite dieting, this 'Phlegm' is likely the culprit. To lose weight healthily, you must first assess the state of your Spleen and Stomach (脾胃). Rather than blindly following others, ensure your body is ready to metabolize protein and consume plenty of vegetables and water to support the circulation of Qi and Blood (氣血).
