I've planned a diet centered around grilled vegetables for weight loss. How does a Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) clinic approach this?

Eating mostly vegetables is a good start, but simply reducing calories or consuming only cold-natured vegetables can lead to fatigue. In TKM, we focus more on how your body absorbs and metabolizes nutrients rather than just what you restrict. To avoid plateaus and lose weight healthily, you must balance nutrition with cooking methods tailored to your specific constitution.

I have personally experienced the dizziness and loss of energy that come from over-ambitiously eating only salads, so I completely understand your approach. Grilled vegetables are generally a better choice than raw ones as they are easier on the digestive system. However, there are a few key TKM principles to consider: 1. Assess Digestive Capacity: For those with Spleen Deficiency (Bi-heo, 脾虛), consuming excessive amounts of vegetables—even cooked ones—can lead to bloating and indigestion. You should adjust the portion size according to your digestive strength. 2. Clearing Metabolic Waste: If your body has an accumulation of Phlegm-Fluid (Dameum, 痰飮)—unnecessary fluids and metabolic waste—your metabolism will remain sluggish regardless of how 'clean' your diet is. In such cases, improving the circulation of Qi and Blood is more urgent than simply increasing vegetable intake. 3. Improving Blood Circulation: The presence of Blood Stasis (Eohyeol, 瘀血) can hinder metabolism, making it harder to lose weight. Incorporating warm-natured vegetables or specific medicinal herbs to improve blood flow can make your weight loss significantly more efficient. 4. Maintaining Protein Balance: Relying solely on vegetables makes it difficult to maintain muscle mass, which eventually lowers your basal metabolic rate. The key is to achieve 'nutritional balance' by adding meats or fish that suit your specific constitution. Ultimately, dieting is the process of restarting your body's internal engine. Rather than a restrictive diet, I recommend first checking if your body is in a state capable of 'burning' fat and seeking a customized prescription tailored to your current physiological condition.
