I’m interested in the popular keto diet. From a Traditional Korean Medicine perspective, what is the best way to start it?

In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), rather than simply increasing fat intake, it is essential to first clear out 'Dameum' (phlegm-fluid or metabolic waste). You should follow a specific sequence: first, detoxify the body; second, strengthen the Spleen's digestive function; and third, activate fat metabolism. Assessing whether your individual constitution is ready to process high fat is the most crucial step to avoid side effects like dizziness.

The idea of losing weight while eating plenty of fat is tempting, but many people experience 'keto flu'—brain fog and fatigue—when starting without proper preparation. In TKM, we believe that for the body to burn fat healthily, you must prepare the internal environment first. First, you must focus on 'clearing.' If the body is filled with 'Dameum' (metabolic waste) or 'Eohyeol' (blood stasis), high-quality fats will not be used as energy but will instead accumulate as toxins. A detoxification phase is necessary before starting the full diet. Second, you must support the 'Spleen' (Bijiang) function. In TKM, the Spleen is central to digestion. Abruptly cutting carbohydrates can lead to 'Biheo' (Spleen Qi deficiency), causing extreme lethargy and indigestion. During this stage, using warming ingredients to protect the stomach helps the body adapt to fat as its new fuel. Third, we focus on the circulation of 'Qi and Blood' (Gi-hyeol). Even with the right fuel, if circulation is stagnant, fat burning remains inefficient. TKM treatments can help 'flip the metabolic switch' based on your specific needs. Finally, the diet must be tailored to your individual constitution (Chejil). What is medicine for one person may be poison for another. By confirming whether your body type can efficiently metabolize fat and adjusting the ratios accordingly, you can achieve sustainable weight loss without the yo-yo effect.
