When should I start my postpartum diet, and how should I manage it?

The first six months are considered the 'golden time' for weight loss, but extreme fasting is strictly forbidden. You must first focus on recovering your general energy and eliminating postpartum edema. Forcing a diet before the body is fully healed can jeopardize your health; therefore, a gradual, step-by-step approach tailored to your individual condition is essential.

Postpartum recovery is akin to the aftermath of a storm. While you may feel rushed to lose weight, Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) prioritizes 'bodily restoration' over immediate weight loss. First, it is crucial to restore Gi and Blood (氣血). Because childbearing causes significant loss of vital energy and blood, restrictive dieting at this stage can delay recovery and leave you exhausted for childcare. Replenishing these essential energies is the primary step. Next is the removal of Blood Stasis (瘀血) and Phlegm-Fluid (痰飮). Blood stasis refers to residual waste in the uterus, and phlegm-fluid refers to metabolic waste in the body. If these remain stagnant, circulation is impaired, making it easy for edema to solidify into permanent fat. Proper circulation is the key to effective weight management. Furthermore, we must address Spleen Deficiency (脾虛) to boost metabolism. When the Spleen is weak, the body cannot absorb nutrients efficiently and instead accumulates toxins. By normalizing Spleen function, we can raise your basal metabolic rate. Only after these foundations are restored do we begin active weight management. To prevent the yo-yo effect, the process must be tailored to your specific constitution and whether you are breastfeeding. I understand the urgency you feel, but now is the time to nurture your body and build a strong foundation. Let's evaluate your current condition together to find the right path for you.
