Doctor's Recommendation Guide
Doctor's Recommendation Guide

Q. I'm thinking about trying an egg-only diet. What do you think as a TKM doctor? Would you recommend it?

A.

While you may be satisfied with the initial weight loss in the short term, I do not recommend this for the long term. It can easily lead to nutritional imbalances and a decline in overall digestive function. Rather than restrictive fasting, it is far more important to find a dietary plan tailored to your specific body constitution.

📝 Detailed Answer

I have personally tried drastically reducing my food intake in the past out of sheer ambition, only to experience dizziness and a complete loss of energy. Experience is the best teacher, and it taught me that the human body is not that simple. The egg diet certainly has advantages: it is convenient to prepare and ensures a high intake of protein. By sharply reducing carbohydrates, you will feel lighter in the beginning. However, the drawbacks are equally distinct. Repeating the same food leads to nutritional imbalances and, more importantly, exhausts the digestive system. In Traditional Korean Medicine, this state is referred to as 'Bi-heo' (Spleen Deficiency). When the Spleen function weakens, your vital energy (Qi) depletes, digestion slows, and your overall metabolism becomes sluggish. This extreme dietary approach can be particularly harmful if you have a 'Dam-eum' constitution (prone to phlegm and fluid retention) or an 'Eo-hyeol' constitution (blood stasis/poor circulation). If you simply starve yourself while leaving internal metabolic waste untouched, the diet becomes inefficient and toxic to the system. Therefore, the answer is that it depends on the individual. It might help if you need a very rapid short-term drop, but for healthy and sustainable weight loss, a balanced diet tailored to your constitution comes first. I recommend first assessing your current metabolic state and constitutional type.
