If I have to eat fast food like Burger King while on a diet, which menu items or combinations would you recommend, Doctor?

Burgers can be an excellent source of protein if you choose wisely. Options like a Junior-sized burger or a Whopper without sauce offer a surprisingly balanced nutritional profile. However, you must be cautious of the high sodium in processed meats, as it can cause edema (swelling) and impair your digestive functions, so please be mindful of your choices.

I recall a time when my own busy clinical schedule forced me to rely on burgers, leaving me feeling bloated and lightheaded. While many consider burgers the ultimate enemy of dieting, they actually have distinct pros and cons. On the positive side, they offer easy protein supplementation and portion control. Beef patties are high-quality protein sources, and choosing a Junior size makes calorie tracking straightforward. You can also supplement fiber by choosing the 'All Extra' option to add more vegetables. However, additives and sodium are significant concerns. In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), these are viewed as causes of 'Dameum' (痰飮), or metabolic waste that accumulates in the body. Excessive salt traps water, hindering the healthy circulation of Qi and fluids. Furthermore, those with 'Spleen Deficiency' (脾虛)—meaning weak digestive function—often experience a stifling sensation in the digestive tract when combining flour-based buns with cold beverages. Whether a burger acts as nourishment or a toxin depends on your current digestive state and level of edema. It can be a hearty meal when you feel light, but I advise avoiding it if your body already feels heavy or you wake up with swelling. When you do eat one, exercise wisdom by choosing water over soda and coleslaw over french fries.
