Doctor, what is the best source of protein for weight loss? I’m getting tired of eating only chicken breast every day.

There is no single "best" protein for dieting. While meat effectively supplements your Qi (energy), consuming it in excess can lead to metabolic waste in the digestive system. Plant-based proteins are gentler on the stomach but may lack nutritional balance. It is best to rotate sources like chicken, white fish, and tofu based on your digestive capacity and physical constitution to ensure long-term health and weight management.

I remember when I used to force myself to eat nothing but chicken breast to build muscle, only to end up feeling nauseous and dizzy. I learned the hard way that following trending diets blindly can be counterproductive. From a Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) perspective, animal protein has a high absorption rate and is excellent for 'Tonifying Qi' (補氣), making it a great support for those with cold constitutions or low energy. However, overconsumption can lead to the accumulation of 'Dam-eum' (痰飮), which is a form of metabolic waste or phlegm-fluid. If you are in a state of 'Spleen Qi Deficiency' (脾虛), excessive meat can actually cause bloating or a feeling of heaviness in the body. Conversely, plant proteins like tofu and beans are low in calories and rich in fiber, making them ideal for cooling down internal heat. However, relying solely on plants may lead to a shortage of essential amino acids, which is disadvantageous for maintaining muscle mass. The most important factor is how your body accepts the food. Choose easily digestible options like white fish or tofu when your digestion is weak, and opt for lean beef or chicken when your vitality is low. Selecting the most 'comfortable' protein for your current digestive capacity and condition is the secret to a sustainable diet.
