Types of Growth Supplements Growth supplements are broadly divided into two types. ①Growth hormone secretagogues This is the most common type of growth supplement, and as the name suggests, it's a medicine that promotes the secretion of growth hormone. It is mainly sold in the form of food or nutritional supplements, with amino acid-based ingredients such as arginine, ornithine, and lysine being the main components. ②Growth hormone preparations Growth hormone preparations, sometimes referred to as growth hormone supplements, literally involve administering growth hormone itself. Growth hormone preparations are prescription-only medications administered in hospitals, prescribed only to children with growth hormone deficiency. Therefore, most growth supplements available at pharmacies, etc., are growth hormone secretagogues. 2. Do Growth Supplements Really Work? Growth hormone secretagogues have not shown consistent effects in clinical studies. Although some studies have shown growth-promoting effects, other studies have concluded that there is no effect. For these reasons, growth hormone secretagogues are not officially used in the treatment of growth failure. As mentioned earlier, growth hormone preparations are definitely effective for children with growth hormone deficiency. However, for children without growth hormone deficiency, research findings indicate that even if growth hormone preparations are administered, the effect is negligible or there is no effect on height growth. 3. What are the side effects of growth hormone preparations? Growth hormone preparations can cause various side effects such as headaches, vomiting, and joint pain. In some cases, severe side effects such as thyroid dysfunction and increased intracranial pressure may occur. Of course, these side effects can be managed through medication adjustment under the supervision of a specialist. However, for children without growth hormone deficiency, there are no benefits to administering growth hormone preparations that would outweigh these side effects. 4. Why Should We Get Bone Age and Growth Plate Examinations? Height growth depends on bone age and the condition of the growth plates. If a child's bone age is advanced compared to their chronological age, the growth plates may close early, and height growth may stop prematurely. Conversely, if bone age is delayed compared to chronological age, the growth plates may close later, and there may be more potential for height growth remaining. Therefore, bone age and growth plate examinations are important for predicting a child's growth potential and establishing an appropriate growth management plan. 5. How Should We Manage Growth? The core of growth management is to understand bone age and the condition of the growth plates, and to find and apply individualized methods suitable for the child.
