I tend to binge eat whenever I'm stressed. Can you tell me how to improve this?

Stress-related binge eating can be divided into two main patterns: immediate emotional reaction versus accumulated stress disrupting appetite control. For the former, behavioral interventions like a '3-second pause' are effective; for the latter, herbal medicine targeting Liver Qi Stagnation or Spleen Deficiency may help. If you're unsure, consulting a Korean medicine clinic is recommended.

From a Traditional Korean Medicine perspective, stress-induced binge eating often involves an imbalance between the Liver and Spleen. Stress primarily blocks the flow of Liver Qi, leading to Liver Qi Stagnation (肝氣鬱結). If prolonged, this weakens the Spleen's digestive and transport function, causing Spleen Deficiency (脾虛). The body then craves sugar or carbohydrates as it cannot utilize energy properly—so it's not simply a willpower issue. Two key patterns emerge: First, if binge eating occurs within 1–2 minutes of stress, focus on recognizing the emotion and shifting behavior—deep breathing or drinking water. Second, if binge eating has become habitual with weight changes or digestive issues, treatment should resolve Liver Qi Stagnation and strengthen the Spleen using herbal formulas that promote Liver Qi circulation or enhance Spleen function. Acupuncture can also help regulate Liver Qi and reduce stress responses. Since individual causes vary, it's best to consult a Korean medicine doctor for a personalized approach. I've personally struggled with stress-related binge eating, and breaking it into patterns made management much easier.
