I've been drinking low-calorie 'diet lattes' while dieting, so why am I still not losing any weight?
While diet lattes are low in calories, sugar substitutes can disrupt insulin sensitivity and stimulate appetite. In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), sweetness is known to generate 'Dampness' (濕), which creates unnecessary waste in the body. If your metabolism becomes stagnant due to this internal accumulation, weight loss will stall regardless of your caloric intake.
It is common to rely on 'diet lattes' or sugar-free drinks when energy levels drop, but the body reacts to more than just calories. From a Western medical perspective, artificial sweeteners can disrupt the gut microbiome, leading to insulin resistance where the body stores fat rather than burning it. In Traditional Korean Medicine, we analyze this through the lens of Spleen Deficiency (脾虛) and Phlegm-Fluid (痰飮). The Spleen is responsible for transformation and transportation; however, excessive sweetness overwhelms this function, leaving behind 'Dampness' (濕). When this dampness stagnates, it turns into 'Phlegm-Fluid'—a metabolic toxin that blocks the circulation of Qi and Blood. Furthermore, consuming these as cold beverages chills the digestive system, further slowing your metabolic rate. Your weight plateau may not be a simple calorie issue, but rather a sign of internal stagnation that needs to be cleared to restore healthy circulation.
