Do zero-calorie drinks or low-calorie coffees really not cause weight gain during a diet? Why do they still affect my body?

To put it simply, while the calories themselves are low, these drinks definitely impact your body's metabolic system. When you consume artificial sweeteners, your brain perceives a sweet taste, but no actual energy (glucose) enters the bloodstream. This creates confusion in your insulin response and appetite regulation systems, eventually leading to 'false hunger' and a decline in overall metabolic efficiency.

Many people believe that as long as the calories are low, these drinks are harmless. However, when the body tastes sweetness, it prepares for an incoming surge of energy. If only artificial sweeteners enter without actual sugar, the brain and pancreas fall into a state of confusion. Repeated exposure to this cycle can affect insulin resistance, potentially leading to a state where the body cannot efficiently process real food. In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), this process is viewed as the accumulation of 'Dameum' (痰飮), which refers to metabolic waste or phlegm-fluid produced when fluid metabolism is impaired. Constant exposure to artificial flavors can overstimulate and irritate the Spleen and Stomach (脾胃) functions. This often leads to 'Bi-heo' (脾虛), or Spleen Deficiency, a state where the digestive and absorptive efficiency of the body is compromised. When you are in a state of Spleen Deficiency, you may feel lethargic and your body may feel heavy. Since the basal metabolic rate drops, your constitution may actually become more prone to gaining weight. The core of a successful diet is not simply erasing the calorie count, but restoring your body's natural metabolic rhythm.
